Compare the top webhosting plans in 2017 – Australia Vs US hosting

| November 7, 2017 | 123 Comments

In Australia everything is overpriced, and website hosting prices is not an exception. I have provided a detailed comparison of top local and US webhosting companies below. I  compare some aussie hosts against US webhosting   so that you can make a informed decision. (Updated 7 November 2017)

compare hosting solutions for blog and websites in 2016 and 2017

If for you – getting a hosting provider that gets the job done is sufficient, you will find much better deals and prices offered from US Website hosting companies. You can get hosting from as low as $2 to $3 a month.

I have multiple websites/blogs  that I run, so I have used most of the website hosting providers recommended below in the comparison chart at some part of time. I currently have four hosting companies for my different websites, which are also included in the list below

Before I started my blog I pussy footed around a lot as to where to get my blog hosting from and finally decided to get it from a US hosting provider even though my blog is Australian focussed, because of the huge price difference.

The other factor that eventually supported my decision was that , you will get a lot of US traffic to your blog even if your blog or website is Australian focused and Australian based, so it does benefit speed wise for your website loading faster to viewers in both countries.

Loading Speed of your website among other factors is a big factor, for your website or blog and so choosing a hosting company that meets all the essential criteria for your website is important.

Below I will give a detailed listing and Comparison with essential factors like bandwidth, Speed, Disk space how many websites you can host on each hosting account etc. , so that you can make an Informed decision by yourself.

Did you want to get a domain if you getting hosting ?

Before you go ahead with Comparing hosting or buying a hosting service for your website, if you have not got a domain, I recommend two providers. The only one I use if Godaddy.com ( one of the best) and if you are getting hosting from one of the providers below , sometimes they throw in a free domain or discounted domain, so you will know if that is available when you get your hosting a/c.

If you intend to get multiple Domains over a period of time, I would suggest go daddy as they provider transfer of domains plus many blogging/website related service all in one place. They have 24/7 US phone support as well.

Comparison of website hosting /Blog hosting

Below are some of the top Hosting providers in the website and blogging industry which also include some of them which I am using now with my affiliate referral and discount links. These are well known to established bloggers with most of these providers already in this industry for more than 10 years.

best 2017 web hosting for blog and starting a website

Some things that is desirable in a hosting provider

Unlimited domain hosting – you can host multiple domains names (www) in 1 hosting account (which means you can have more than one website in one account)

Free Site builder Or wordpress support– All providers support wordpress, but not all have a site builder, but I would suggest wordpress support is all that you need ( easy to build and maintain a website)

Email Account : Not all providers give you and email account with your domain name, but most of them listed here do so. So if you got a website blahblah.com then you would be able to get a email such as yourname@blahblah.com for yourself for free.

Uptime – You don’t want your hosting-company having downtime, which means you are paying them for hosting your website and their servers are overloaded and crashing all the time and so your website is not showing to your viewers or its just taking ages to load because of them , not good . Most of the providers here have 99.9 % uptime.

Compare hosting plans from many hosting providers to find the best features for your website at the best price for your budget

I have written a Recommended against the providers, for the ones I think I would readily sign up for a second account right now!

The information and listing given above is generally what you will need to get started with a hosting company and choose a suitable hosting provider, but if you want to research a bit further , do read on and i will provide more general information on wordpress hosting

—————————————————————————————————–

How to Choose the Best WordPress Hosting?

There are various different types of WordPress hosting options available such as Free, Shared, VPS, Dedicated, and managed WordPress hosting. Generally the shared hosting is one of the cheapest hosting-options ($3 to $5 a month) available and this should do for most beginners in blogging or people starting a website.

The above listings are all shared hosting plan prices, with most of them also offering VPS or dedicated hosting. Most Shared hosting plans easily handles traffic anywhere from 1000 to 4000 visits a day to your website without any problems or slowness.

Once you get over 2000 visits a day you can easily generate some money from the traffic either from AdSense or other methods ,and it’s time for your to consider moving to a more optimised hosting provider anyway to get the most from your blog traffic. If you Are getting more than 2,000 to 4,000 Unique visits a day to your blog, its worth checking out CDNS ( content delivery networks) or then even VPS or dedicated hosting.

The technical Bits – So what is Linux hosting Vs windows hosting

To most people this wont matter, unless your more technical minded if your hosting uses linux hosting or windows hosting. Both of them do the job efficiently. Linux and windows are just two different server systems or software which hold your website files and make it all work and come together. Both windows and Linux support popular wordpress blogging platform, however wordpress is much more supported by linux. Most providers give you a control panel or cpanel which makes managing your backend of your website easy anyway.

Some of other bits that are worth considering if you know how it works it

Control panel – A cpanel control panel is very easy to navigate  and  do admin things on the backend , so if they have this its a plus

Google adwords  – Google or bing adwords bonus provided with plan is a good bonus to start some free advertising on the search engines

1 click install  – I click install makes it easy to install wordpress the preferred blogging software among bloggers

Vps Hosting  – IF they have this  when your traffic reaches  thousands a day , this is a good upgrade option to have

Live chat  – This is good to have instant support  from your hosting company.

Renewal rates  – Make sure their renewal rates after first year is not a rip off.

Linux or windows hosting – Most host use Linux hosting for  blogging, but it really does not matter, if you just want to run a normal website or blog.

Support for  Blogging software – Make sure its supports at least at the minimum wordpress  and also  Joomla and drupal. As these other two are good alternative if you don’t want to go with wordpress.

[ Disclosure: Digitalgrog.com.au is  a Bluehost/ Hostgator/Hostmonster/ Godaddy / Dreamhost/ Ipage affiliate partner and we also have hosting accounts with these services, which means that in addition to using their service, we also receive a commission for referring new customers. To be fair, though, we would still use  any of these Hosting services , but do have a preference  for some  and so we have done a full review of all the hosting  partners we use. Ergo, we don’t recommend Bluehost or any featured host just because we’re an affiliate (every hosting company offers a similar affiliate program and you could pick any of them ), but we recommend Bluehost because they are the best, most reliable option. Plus, because we’re a partner, Bluehost offers a special price for digitalgrog.com.au readers: only $3.95 a month and you already have our godaddy $1 special above. That’s a phenomenal price. Links provided above will take you to  the latest updated promo deals. Feel free to pick which host suits your budget or preference and good luck 🙂 ]

Hello Very informitive. I am in Australia looking at having a .com with a global audience and I want my site to appear and perform well for global visitors, at a later state I will also introduce a .com.au for target of Australia only. I have been looking at VentraIP and Panthur and comparing to bluehost.

I can enable CDN on the VentraIP and Panthur to help with global audience/search results. How will this compare with using bluehost instead

    • JJ says:

You can use CDN with most hosting to boost up speed including bluehost.
I Have not heard or used of these other hosts you mention, so cant give any advice on them
You can research online on them for more information. If you do end up going with them – do post your experience with them here

      cheers

What is cms .. is it a kind of website.. do these hosts provide that

    Thanks
    Jame

    • JJ says:

      Hey Dude
A CMS is just what we call a Content Management system, Like wordpress is a CMS as it manages all content like text you upload for posts, Video and pics etc for your website.
It takes care of everything you need to run a website , so its called a content management system
You can make use of one of the discount offers above if you want to build a wordpress website
Hope i made it simple enough
      🙂

This pain and inconvenience can be greatly reduced by
choosing the popular managed website hosting services.
It’s a good idewa to set up one for the owner, such ass president@yourdomain ddot com.
Their management group is there’re to push the company forward
inside greatest tactics them to know how.

  9. Maggie says:

I’m looking to witch to Bluehost for my current Australian website. My current domain registrar was tied up with my hosting and web design service a year ago. I’m not really happy with the functionality so am looking to switch. Do u think it’s necessary for me to switch domain registrar and hosting service to Bluehost, or should I just find a new Australian domain registrar and only sign up for Bluehost for hosting service?
P.S. My domain has AU extension, which I don’t thinki Bluehost accepts the transfer. What’s your recommendation.
Enjoyed your blog by the way.
    Thanks

    • JJ says:

you can still keep your domain name with your current provider and point it to bluehost hosting account. Personally if i was transferring a domain i would rather transfer it to go daddy and still be able to use bluehost hosting. Godaddy support can help you point your domain to bluehost servers if you get stuck

  10. Inna says:

Hi, I usually host everything with Hostgator and quite happy with it and with support they provide.

I’ve just had a problem with Hostgator though, they do not register .com.au domains. As far as we are talking about Australia here, it is a drawback.

    Go Daddy does register those.

    • JJ says:

Unfortunately they dont register .com.au domains, but that doesnt mean you cant use their hosting .
I register domains with godaddy and then point to my hosting and use their hosting

  11. Roy says:

I have consulted iPage, GoDaddy..etc. Google Adwords bonus cannot be used in Australia. Does anyone know which web hosting service can do that?

    • JJ says:

Im surprised with that ..i have always been able to do that ..but saying that i haven’t purchased a new hosting account as mine is years old.

Talk about us always getting a raw deal.. yet they make so much money off us

  12. Ryan says:

    Hi JJ

I want to build 3 websites from different purposes and I want to obviously host them. Is there a company that will allow me to build my 3 websites and host all of them whilst charging me one fee? It seems that from the research that I’ve done, that each time you build a new website, you need to pay for each one, meaning it’s going to cost me a lot. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Ryan form Perth Western Australia

    • JJ says:

      Hi Ryan
I would suggest for having mutliple websites and paying just once you go for the $5.95 Bluehost Unlimited plan and not the $3.95 plan. Just click on hosting on the top on that page and choose the $5.95 plan. You should be able to have many websites on that 1 hosting plan, you will just have to pay for any new domain names you buy. Godaddy is cheap for domain names, you can use your bluehost hosting account even for domains purchaser with godaddy

      cheers
      Jeff

  13. Cheyne says:

Not replying to any of the later comments, I just want to say feel free to try TechTronix Hosting Local Aussie Website Hosting, Quite exceptional load times compared to some bigger companies we like to use these days. free Auto SSL being offered for Business Hosting. alot of space, domain names and emails in each package. (support of 24/7 haha) check it out. its cheap, loads of cPanel features and Good uptime and bonus SSL for Free my three ticks.

  14. Hassan Raza says:

Good List but I am surprised not to find any mention Cloudways in it, they are also one of the best hosting providers in Australia, their hosting service is very fast, reliable and pocket friendly, prices start from 7$ per month.

    • JenniferN says:

What do mean “hosting providers in Australia”? Cloudways is based in Malta. Their prices are in USD.

  15. Hi JJ.

Please advise where to register my domain as it is somewhere in USA after my another domain was stolen. My website currently is hosted bu a company in UK. I was advised to have a host in Australia (as I live here) and to have a domain provider perhaps here as well?

    • JJ says:

      Hi Micheal,

Godaddy is a good domain registar, even though they are a us based one – they are the opnlye ones that can also sell .com.au domain names. It does not matter where your hosting or domain is purchased unless you are expecting 100% aus traffic to your website.

Please shoot me email or contact me button – if your want specific answers

  16. siddhi says:

nice and informative article thanks for sharing it keep writting such articles

  17. JenniferN says:

Remember to add 40% to the USD numbers to get AUD equivalents. The Australian providers don’t look so uncompetitive then!

I’ve used a number of hosts, both for large and small sites. I was happy with Bluehost until recently. I currently need only a small plan, for 2 domains only used for 6 email accounts. The best (renewal) price Bluehost will give me is USD11.99/mth for 24 months. When I started with them 5 or so years ago it was $5/mth.

It’s worth shifting hosts every year or two just to get sign-up prices!

    • JJ says:

That is true jennifer. The deal normally is only when you sign up as a new user. It renews at normal prices, thats why its better to go with a longer plan if available. You can always switch after that if your technically savvy

      jeff

  18. Remagius says:

    hey dude

i dont want to go bluehost and godaddy , is Hostmosnter any good in your opininion

    thank you
    remagius

    • JJ says:

Hostmonster if good enough for a starter blog, but you would want to upgrade to a better plan once your traffic starts to go above 400 hits a day. It all depends how crowded your server is if your on a shared plan.
But then there is always the option to think about a cdn service before you upgrade hosting servers.I suggest cloudflare

      cheers
      jeff
