Compare the top webhosting plans in 2016 – Australia Vs US hosting

| August 11, 2016 | 70 Comments

In Australia everything is overpriced, and website hosting prices is not an exception. I have provided a detailed comparison of top local and US webhosting companies below. I  compare some aussie hosts against US webhosting   so that you can make a informed decision. (Updated 7 Sept 2016)

compare hosting solutions for blog and websites

If for you – getting a hosting provider that gets the job done is sufficient, you will find much better deals and prices offered from US Website hosting companies. You can get hosting from as low as $2 to $3 a month.

I have multiple websites/blogs  that I run, so I have used most of the website hosting providers recommended below in the comparison chart at some part of time. I currently have four hosting companies for my different websites, which are also included in the list below

Before I started my blog I pussy footed around a lot as to where to get my blog hosting from and finally decided to get it from a US hosting provider even though my blog is Australian focussed, because of the huge price difference. The other thing that eventually supported my decision was that , you will get a lot of US traffic to your blog even if your blog or website is Australian focused and Australian based, so it does benefit speed wise for your website loading faster to viewers in both countries.

Loading Speed of your website among other factors is a big factor, for your website or blog and so choosing a hosting company that meets all the essential criteria for your website is important. Below I will give a detailed listing and Comparison with essential factors like bandwidth, Speed, Disk space how many websites you can host on each hosting account etc. , so that you can make an Informed decision by yourself.

Did you want to get a domain if you getting hosting ?

Before you go ahead with Comparing hosting or buying a hosting service for your website, if you have not got a domain, I recommend two providers. The only one I use if ( one of the best) and if you are getting hosting from one of the providers below , sometimes they throw in a free domain or discounted domain, so you will know if that is available when you get your hosting a/c. If you intend to get multiple Domains over a period of time, I would suggest go daddy as they provider transfer of domains plus many blogging/website related service all in one place. They have 24/7 US phone support as well.

Comparison of website hosting /Blog hosting

Below are some of the top Hosting providers in the website and blogging industry which also include some of them which I am using now with my affiliate referral and discount links. These are well known to established bloggers with most of these providers already in this industry for more than 10 years.

best web hosting for blog and starting a website

Some things that is desirable in a hosting provider

Unlimited domain hosting – you can host multiple domains names (www) in 1 hosting account (which means you can have more than one website in one account)

Free Site builder Or wordpress support– All providers support wordpress, but not all have a site builder, but I would suggest wordpress support is all that you need ( easy to build and maintain a website)

Email Account : Not all providers give you and email account with your domain name, but most of them listed here do so. So if you got a website then you would be able to get a email such as for yourself for free.

Uptime – You don’t want your hosting-company having downtime, which means you are paying them for hosting your website and their servers are overloaded and crashing all the time and so your website is not showing to your viewers or its just taking ages to load because of them , not good . Most of the providers here have 99.9 % uptime.

Compare hosting plans from many hosting providers to find the best features for your website at the best price for your budget

I have written a Recommended against the providers, for the ones I think I would readily sign up for a second account right now!

The information and listing given above is generally what you will need to get started with a hosting company and choose a suitable hosting provider, but if you want to research a bit further , do read on and i will provide more general information on wordpress hosting

How to Choose the Best WordPress Hosting?

There are various different types of WordPress hosting options available such as Free, Shared, VPS, Dedicated, and managed WordPress hosting. Generally the shared hosting is one of the cheapest hosting-options ($3 to $5 a month) available and this should do for most beginners in blogging or people starting a website.

The above listings are all shared hosting plan prices, with most of them also offering VPS or dedicated hosting. Most Shared hosting plans easily handles traffic anywhere from 1000 to 4000 visits a day to your website without any problems or slowness.

Once you get over 2000 visits a day you can easily generate some money from the traffic either from AdSense or other methods ,and it’s time for your to consider moving to a more optimised hosting provider anyway to get the most from your blog traffic. If you Are getting more than 2,000 to 4,000 Unique visits a day to your blog, its worth checking out CDNS ( content delivery networks) or then even VPS or dedicated hosting.

The technical Bits – So what is Linux hosting Vs windows hosting

To most people this wont matter, unless your more technical minded if your hosting uses linux hosting or windows hosting. Both of them do the job efficiently. Linux and windows are just two different server systems or software which hold your website files and make it all work and come together. Both windows and Linux support popular wordpress blogging platform, however wordpress is much more supported by linux. Most providers give you a control panel or cpanel which makes managing your backend of your website easy anyway.

Some of other bits that are worth considering if you know how it works it

Control panel – A cpanel control panel is very easy to navigate  and  do admin things on the backend , so if they have this its a plus

Google adwords  – Google or bing adwords bonus provided with plan is a good bonus to start some free advertising on the search engines

1 click install  – I click install makes it easy to install wordpress the preferred blogging software among bloggers

Vps Hosting  – IF they have this  when your traffic reaches  thousands a day , this is a good upgrade option to have

Live chat  – This is good to have instant support  from your hosting company.

Renewal rates  – Make sure their renewal rates after first year is not a rip off.

Linux or windows hosting – Most host use Linux hosting for  blogging, but it really does not matter, if you just want to run a normal website or blog.

Support for  Blogging software – Make sure its supports at least at the minimum wordpress  and also  Joomla and drupal. As these other two are good alternative if you don’t want to go with wordpress.

[ Disclosure: is  a Bluehost/ Hostgator/Hostmonster/ Godaddy / Dreamhost/ Ipage affiliate partner and we also have hosting accounts with these services, which means that in addition to using their service, we also receive a commission for referring new customers. To be fair, though, we would still use  any of these Hosting services , but do have a preference  for some  and so we have done a full review of all the hosting  partners we use. Ergo, we don’t recommend Bluehost or any featured host just because we’re an affiliate (every hosting company offers a similar affiliate program and you could pick any of them ), but we recommend Bluehost because they are the best, most reliable option. Plus, because we’re a partner, Bluehost offers a special price for readers: only $3.95 a month and you already have our godaddy $1 special above. That’s a phenomenal price. Links provided above will take you to  the latest updated promo deals. Feel free to pick which host suits your budget or preference and good luck 🙂 ]

  8. Andy says:

    Hi JJ,

I’m starting up an online recruitment business largely with an Australian user base. I’m estimating for decent levels of traffic about 10,000-30,000 visits per month within the first year. Which web hosting provider would you recommend? It’s been suggested by another Australian review site that Dream Host is the best overseas hosting provider.

I’m interested to know what you think. Thanks mate

    • JJ says:

      Hi andy

Dreamhost is not on the top of my list for a reason..But I have not tested out their optimized hosting yet.
I would suggest one that has good upgrade options to VPS and Dedicated hosting from shared hosting, so bluehost and hostgator fits the bill nicely for that!!

Good luck on your new website !

  9. Andrew says:

    Hi JJ,
I’m new to all of this & am interested to setup my own website
I have read various articles & have also been pointed towards Bluehost as a preferred hosting service, then using WordPress as a preferred web platform

Does Bluehost include free domain or paid domain ?
I’m based in Australia, are there any disadvantages hosting via an International non Australian company ?
The basic package @ $3.49/mth – are there limitations on the number of photos ? my site would plan to have over 1000 + photos – hobbyist/collection & also offering an online ecommerce cart/checkout faclity

    Sorry about all the questions

Your information has been the most informative i have read, great work

    • JJ says:

      Hi Andrew,
If you are starting a new website and want a reasonably good host then surely Bluehost will do the job well. You can opt for pricey hosting like wp engine etc only if you have a top end website with thousands of traffic everyday. You get a Free domain name with bluehost.
As far as local hosting and international hosting goes, as I said it doesn’t relay make much of a difference as you will get international traffic , however saying that some US Hosts are definitely faster than Au hosts even with them being locally hosted. Bluehost will easily fit your needs for a 1000+ graphic blog or website and I think they have some gallery script software as well if you don’t want to go with wordpress. Their software install is a self-explanatory quick install process.
In the future you could possibly look into a plugin that uploads images to Amazon AWS and posts it to your blog , if your traffic get s to very high level, as I assume your images can be of large mb?
Looks like you just missed out on a sale for $2.95. Check here for latest price its back to $3.95

  10. Yocta says:

I have a question, do I need to buy a hosting package if I only want to point my Blog on Blogger to my personal URL. Currently i’ve been paying $79/yr for a basic hosting package with Godaddy. I had someone set up my pointing on my Blogger Blog to my URL, but now i’m not sure why i’m paying $79/yr unless I needed it to have the pointing, what’s your thoughts?

    im thinking square space dude
    for hosting

Squarespace is a fully-managed web service. We do not have plans to make a downloadable version. Squarespace does provide many standard methods for exporting your data.

Customers selling through Squarespace’s Website product will be charged a 2% transaction fee on the Business plan, and a 3% transaction fee on the Personal Plan, in addition to Stripe’s charges. To eliminate these transaction fees, you can upgrade to a Commerce plan at any time.

Wordpess websites and sQuarspace websites are totally different . I prefer wordpress as you can do so much more with plugins and many themes are available

  15. carmel milne says:

    Hi JJ,
I am a bit ignorant when it comes to all the backside stuff for our webpage. We had gone through a mob to do our web page and paid them for hosting it. Now We have just paid them $330 for 2 years hosting only to have them go belly up. We have been sent a letter from 6YS to say they will continue to look after everything for another 5 days but then we will have to pay them. I had no idea that the mob we had been dealing with then passed it on to someone else. My question is should I just stick with them? I have not found much on them at all and would hate them to go belly up as well or do we seek out someone else and start the whole process again…We do have to redo our website and thank God I procrastinated otherwise we would be really out of pocket!

    • JJ says:

I carmel ..alredy replied to your email addy ,,

Yes purchasing a hosting account enables you to build a website on their servers,
I would suggest either bluehost or godaddy if you want a cheaper price.

Starting a wordpress blog is easy with 1 click install with these services

    • Cynthia says:

      Hi Jeff, great article!

Carmel, we were also hosted with Graphics Online until they went under.

We found WP Hosting and moved to them ( because they are Australian based and WordPress specialists. A lot of other companies will host WordPress, but not many will actually help you if you run into problems. WP Hosting have already helped me when I have crashed my site due to a bad plugin installation.

The are a little more expensive, but I run a business that needs to stay online, so I don’t mind paying a bit more for a higher quality service.

  16. Anand says:

looking at webhosting as well as designing and building a website. some of the above companies e.g godaddy have pricing for webbuilder and also webhosting. do i need them both? But bluehosting has only 1 e.g the $7.95 (popular) plan which I am looking says includes hosting and wordpress. what does that mean? once i sign this up does this mean I can design and build my own website using this plan? sorry mate. I am new to this. any guidance would be appreciated. thank you in advance.

    • JJ says:

      Hi anand,

Yes purchasing a hosting account enables you to build a website on their servers,
I would suggest either bluehost or godaddy if you want a cheaper price.

  17. Rosemary says:

Hi, very informative reviews, but you missed out on one aspect. Our current host cannot host websites so we are looking for another host or alternative option as we are setting up some new sites.

It would also be helpful if you could include that comment, and perhaps have a grid which showed each the above and how they compare “apples with apples”.

  18. Andrew says:

You should consider for a local host. I previously had hosting through another company but when it went belly up they sold out the customers to VentraIP and i’m now on the $5/month VentraIP economy plan. Their support team seem great and haven’t had any complaints about downtime from my customers.

  19. Simone says:

Thanks for the bluehost discount link worked for me

  20. JB says:

Is shared hosting the same as a self hosted blog

    • JJ says:

      Hi JB

      Yes it is
Shared hosting is where there are multiple users are using just one server to host their websites – Users are all sharing one server.

Self hosted – A blog that uses it own paid serveris called a Self hosted blog , rather than a free service like Blogspot by google or tumblr blog etc that provide their server with their custom blog software for free use with restrictions for the user.

Hello I wish I found this website before. I purchased dreamhost web hosting a year ago but could not find any coupon codes at the time. Since then Ive found a few promotions that are half the price of what im paying for it now. Anyone know how I can change it to the promotion price using one of the coupon codesor is that not possible?

    • JJ says:

i WILL bite the SEO bullet ,, and reply
Yes coupons give you discount ..but not after you purchase already sorry .. cant help you

If you are looking for a second account tho ,… be my guest to use any of my discount links or coupon codes

  23. Andres says:

    Hi JJ,

I found your article very helpful, however, I am a bit stuck with the domain. I signed up with eHost a few days ago and “registered” my domain. When I was to install WordPress I had many errors and a the end they told me they don’t support domains so I would have to keep it .com. I would like to have a domain as I’m in Australia and my website will target Australians. I had already bought a .com domain with go daddy and thought I could use the free domain with the hosting company as my Anyways, I can see that, for example BlueHost doesn’t support international domains either unless you buy it externally and bring it to them. What do you do when you sign up with them? I don’t want to buy more domains but take the free domain opportunity with those companies.
Thank you and sorry for the long post. Regards,

I am already processing the refund with eHost as I thought it would have been explained before letting me register initially.

    • JJ says:

      Hi andres

I suggest you either get a hosting account with godaddy and host your purchased domain with them (thats possible) or then Buy the hosting account with Bluehost get the free domain name as a spare and use you actual domain purchased with godaddy to point to bluehost.

Just make sure you get the bluehost plan where you can host multiple blogs and set up a blog on your spare free domain an duse that to boost your domain with SEO.

  24. Derry O'Donovan says:

Hi, I’m currently using “domaincentral” to supply me with my domain, they cost about $30 per year, all i use are emails, they are currently broken down again and its sending me insane.
I only need about twenty email addresses,
Can i still use my domain name that i have and use it with a different provider?
    what do you recommend.

    • JJ says:

I believe there is a way to do that , but you will have to get someone who has more detailed knowledge in this as it will take some work and time to get this done , the simple way – Dump your current one or just move your domains to a new registrar (might cost money)

  25. Andres says:

I Manage a decent size online shop, and not happy with the hasting we have now.
We will be getting a new website done (on Magento) and I was going to use the opportunity to change hosting provider.
We have an average of 12k visitors per month (sometimes more, specially on obvious peaks like christmas ) and 2,500+ products on our store.

Can you suggest a hosting solution? not concern about paying a bit more.
    Thanks for the help!

  26. Gavan says:

We currently have our sites on VentraIP for small business, we have 9.8GB of email and they now want us to pay $30 / mo to have this size of emails on 3 accounts supported.
Of all of the companies reviewed who allows for unlimited email storage ?, this is different to to unlimited accounts and unlimited disk storage…

    • JJ says:

True ..sounds a bit high just for email ..there is a way to host your emails elsewhere for cheaper .. or then just consider changing hosts

  27. Good blog post. I absolutely love this site. Stick with it!

  28. jane myers says:

does the wordpress hosting on bluehost allow you to have multiple sites on it . would be interested if so
