Unfortunately for this to work, you should have done this before losing your password, and if you were proactive and done it before, then you can easily use this Windows 10 password reset disk that you created to unlock your PC.

- Boot from the Windows 10 DVD. Make sure that your PC setup is configured to boot from a DVD and that UEFI and Secure Boot are disabled.

If you are using a Microsoft account, as well as a computer on which you cannot log in, connected to the Internet (or you can connect from the lock screen by clicking on the connection icon), then you can easily reset your password on the official website. yes if your laptop login is your microsoft live /hotmail login then your dont need software. so thats good.
But most people use local login password for laptop login as they dont want Microsoft to access everything they are doing , so use local login and password and you will need this software to then unlock it.
