Virtual Reality: The Future of iGaming Technology

In this modern era, where technology grows by leaps and bounds every year, most industries now depend on digital advancements for continued success. This is particularly true within the gaming industry, where traditional consoles are now being replaced with innovative offerings such as virtual reality. Otherwise known as VR, virtual reality is predicted to become the most influential game changer since the internet first made online games a reality, particularly for the iGaming industry.

According to a report published by Tech Crunch earlier in 2017, the virtual reality/augmented reality (AR) market will be worth $108 billion by 2021, so it’s no surprise that iGaming developers such as Microgaming and Playtech are already investing in VR technology.

This is especially true when we consider the fact that the casino industry has managed to stay on the brink of modern technology for many decades now, often adopting different platforms and systems before its console or PC counterparts.

Of course, software developers and online casino operators aren’t capitalising on virtual reality technologies just to stay current. Arguably, the casino industry has always adapted to ensure customers receive the best experience possible. This is why land-based casino brands decided to create online presences, so that customers could reach their favourite games without having to lift a finger, never mind travel from around the world. Meanwhile, sites such as Australia’s own pokies.com made titles including slots, table games and scratches even more accessible and fun by creating multiple platforms on desktops, tablets and smartphones.

By introducing VR technology into iGaming, the online experience will become even more enjoyable, authentic and accessible than ever.

This is why a variety of gaming specialists such as GameAccount Network (GAN), Oculus Rift and Casino-VR are already focusing much of their effort on crafting VR services that will improve gamers’ experiences.

Speaking to Proactive Investors, GameAccount Network’s chief executive Dermot Smurfit stated that: “Playing authentic casino games in VR for real money will dramatically close the gap between the live gaming experience available on property and the experience available at home.”

Fortunately for trendsetters like Smurfit, headsets, VR-centric casinos, VR apps, VR glasses, VR consoles and 3D gaming tech is very much available, these companies simply need to apply them.

There are a number of sites and software systems available at this time that have done this, but they are yet to go mainstream. This is possibly due to the fact VR products are still relatively expensive to buy, especially for the individual gaming fans that the online casinos wish to reach.

According to PC Mag Australia, a PS VR headset currently costs $400, with up to $160 in accessories, while an Oculus Rift is $500 and the HTC Vive is an astonishing $800.

Thankfully, there are a number of untethered mobile VR headsets that were recently released including the Google Daydream ($79) and Samsung Gear VR ($130), but these are played using a mobile phone, which some gambling fans may not prefer.

For now, it seems as though we will have to wait for virtual reality pokies to truly come into their own. Right now, we are witnessing the first steps towards a true VR casino experience, and hopefully, the real thing will be worth the wait.

The Many Uses of Facial Recognition Technology

March 27, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Many people believe facial recognition software technology is only used for security purposes. Others question if the technology even works. I assure you, the technology is very real, and has many uses in addition to surveillance. In fact, there are exciting new uses for the software being created all the time.

What Is It?

So, to begin with—what is facial recognition technology, or biometric face recognition technology? Techopedia defines facial recognition as a “biometric software application capable of uniquely identifying or verifying a person by comparing and analyzing patterns based on the person’s facial contours.”

There are many benefits to facial recognition technology, such as the ability to take a video shot of a person’s face from a distance and analyzing their photo without ever approaching the person. In addition, a person cannot imitate another person. The technology is also inexpensive compared to other biometric technologies.

There are some disadvantages to the software. Of course lighting needs to be considered when the software is in use. The software may not be as reliable if the light is too dim, or if part of the individual’s face is blocked. In addition, sometimes the software can have some trouble when a person’s facial expressions change.

Protecting the Home

Some home cameras use facial recognition technology. These cams use wi-fi cameras along with facial recognition software that checks the identity of houseguests. The technology allows the identity of each member of the household to be registered. This way the technology will turn off when a household member is home. The camera streams video so that the user can see their home live via Android and iOS apps. If an unidentified person is recognised in the home, the user is notified.

Smart Restaurant

Facial recognition technology is being used in one unique smart restaurant in Beijing. The software actually makes recommendations as to what a customer may want to order. The facial recognition software scans a customer’s face and makes suggestions based upon different factors such as the customer’s facial expression—the software also guesses the customer’s gender, and age. The technology even recognises return customers, and will remember your past orders. Your favourite meals will then be suggested to you.

Public Protection

The biometric facial software scans individuals’ faces in CCTV (closed-circuit television). Law enforcement agencies across the world protect the public by identifying potential persons of interest using CCTV. Face recognition technology is also used by border control agencies, verifying travelers’ identities. There are schools that use facial recognition technology software to keep watch on their campuses, keeping them safe. Airport terminals are also using the technology to be sure the public is secure.

The Digital World

Companies with payment apps use the software, and it’s now being used in the digital world. ShutterStock and Facebook, as well as other social media apps that try to identify individuals shown in photos, use the technology. Authentication of a smartphone owner’s identification can be made by taking selfies. Industries, such as marketing, are able to compile demographic information about groups of people.

Venue Safety

Facial recognition technology is often used to protect private functions, casinos and small public locations. Photographs are taken of guests as they enter a venue or site. These photos are then run through a facial recognition software, with the objective of recognising and potentially nabbing persons who should not be in attendance.

The software can be useful in providing the necessary safety security and well-being of the attendees or guests.

Changing the World

Whatever facial recognition software is used for, biometric technology is here to stay. It will become more and more accurate as well. Facial recognition technology is truly changing the world. Like it or not, you are being watched!

Any other uses for facial recognition technology you’ve either used or heard of?

5 PC hardware pieces you’ll want to try out in 2017

February 13, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

teh gigabyte laptop

With new-fangled technologies making their way onto the marketplace seemingly every day, PC users are by now undoubtedly familiar with the need to upgrade their systems on a regular basis. Not all hardware pieces are created equal, however, which is why we’ve taken the time to shine a spotlight on the best items currently available in stores:

The ideal video card

For many PC rigs, video cards are unquestionably the stars of the show. They bear the brunt of responsibility when it comes to displaying visual elements on your monitor, which means that everything from games to high-definition videos need them in order to function properly. Luckily, nowadays you can find excellent deals on video cards in online stores such as PC Byte, where a top gaming card like the MSI Radeon RX 480 can be found for just a shade over $400. This video card is powerful enough to allow users to experience the world of virtual reality gaming, while at the same time featuring advanced cooling capabilities that are designed to keep it running silently even when under heavy use.

A processor to rule them all

Next to video cards, processors are just as essential when it comes to keeping your PC running smoothly. Right now, the Intel Core i5-7600K stands out due to offering the best value in its price range. Available for less than $250 dollars in most online stores, the processor is strong enough to handle even the most demanding games, while also boasting some nifty overclocking potential. While it may lack the insane number of cores that defines other high-end processors, the Intel Core i5-7600K is powerful enough to fulfil the needs of most PC users.

A reliable UPS

As electrical grids age and power outages become even more common, the chances of experiencing a blackout that causes you to lose valuable data on your PC will also increase exponentially. This makes the need to purchase a reliable uninterruptible power supply even more urgent. UPSes can be found across multiple prices ranges, but for the average PC user a decent one can be bought for less than $200. For instance, the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD 1500VA has enough juice to handle most gaming machines, even those running dual GPUs. It’s also quite compact for its load support, and boasts an LCD screen that allows you to monitor your computer’s status closely.

The speediest RAM

Costing much less than a new video card or processor, a good-quality memory card can nevertheless help your PC run much faster than before. Nowadays DDR4 is the latest standard in the industry, but you can still find great deals on DDR3 RAM if your motherboard doesn’t have the appropriate slots for the newest technology. Most PCs will be fine with 8GB of memory, but you can upgrade to 16GB if you really want to stay safe on this front for the next couple of years as well. To that end, the Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB DDR4 currently retails at less than $120, making it a great option for people who are relatively short on funds.

The best storage option

Your computer’s storing capabilities are what ultimately determine its capacity to hold whatever it is you want to keep on it. While cloud-based solutions may one day render hardware limitations obsolete, for now having a good storage option is still essential if you want to have apps and games on your PC. While SSDs used to lag behind traditional hard disks when it came to size, they’ve recently caught up. The Samsung 850 EVO 500GB, for instance, retails for around $150 and boasts tremendous read speeds that regularly hit 500MB/second. It can be purchased in versions ranging from the comparatively tiny 120GB to the absolutely massive 4TB, enough to handle the requirements of even the most dedicated of software hoarders.

Whether you want to use your PC as a high-end gaming rig or if you simply want it to be powerful enough to run full HD videos smoothly, the aforementioned items will give your system the kick it needs to stay with the times. So don’t hesitate to make some timely investments today in order to have a competitive PC tomorrow.

Why Gaming Is Actually Good for You

February 2, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

From the very early days of the gaming industry, gamers have been told that they are wasting time or that the level of violence is adversely affecting them. With the recent tragedies in the country once again putting games front and center of media coverage, there are many people decrying the industry and calling for more controls and warning about their inherent ability to drag a good person down.

is gaming harmful

Not all gaming is bad for you, though. While it’s easy to run a quick internet search to find a lot of evidence that seems to support the position that all gamers are just violent psychopaths waiting to happen (it took this long just to get the R18+ rating implemented after all), there is actually a large body of work that suggests just the opposite. In fact, it could be that gaming is actually pretty good for you.

Video Games – The Old Arguments Are Still Valid

There was a time when claiming that “it helps improve my hand-eye coordination” seemed like such a hollow argument to justify your desire to protect the earth from invading aliens or a quite suburb from a raging zombie horde. But it turns out there’s a lot of truth to it. A study conducted by Iowa State University psychologist Douglas Gentile, PhD, and William Stone, BS, examined 33 laparoscopic surgeons. The doctors who played video games, it turns out, were 27% faster at advanced surgical procedures and made 37% fewer errors than they’re non-gaming contemporaries. That, it would seem, definitely counts as real world value.

Of course, the potential benefits go beyond dexterous hands. In another study carried out by Fordham University psychologist Fran C. Blumberg, PhD, and Sabrina S. Ismailer, MSED, the problem-solving skills of 122 kids between fifth and seventh grade was observed while they played games they had never played before. The results seemed to suggest an improvement in their cognitive and perceptual skills.

One possible reason for this is the way that games (at least the good ones) rely on something called the “regime of competence principle.” What this basically means is that games push the user to the limits of their skills and capabilities and then refuses to let them go any further until a new skill is learned or they are able to build on what they already have. In other words, the best gamers must have the ability to focus, be patient, and be willing to delay gratification until all the necessary steps have been accomplished.

Real World Qualities

A lot of these problem-solving skills and other attributes translate well into real-world situations. Consider the common MMORPG player. These gamers tend to be right at home in a collaborative environment and are often developing their problem-solving skills, building an attention to detail, and are rewarded for creativity. Serious players also tend to see the value of diversity as they put together a team and naturally build on individuals’ strengths.

It is also now looking like almost any computer game has the potential to boost a child’s creativity. Some researchers at Michigan State University’s Children and Technology Project reported on a three-year study of 491 middle school students. They found that the more these kids played computer games, the higher their scores on a standardized test of creativity. It didn’t seem to matter if they were playing action adventure games or sports games, as long as they were “real games.” In other words, the kids that showed higher scores were the ones that were playing on a gaming laptop or PC, not a mobile phone or on an Internet-based game.

It appears that computer games have a lot of potential to actually be beneficial. Of course, there is a need for moderation in any sort of pastime or hobby, but the gaming industry doesn’t have to be the refuge of danger and violence that many people in positions of authority have claimed.
