Guide: How to install a WordPress Blog Theme

If you are a new blogger, it is essential you know about wordpress website themes and how to install one on your blog. Installing a theme on a word press website is not hard at all and I will give you a detailed tutorial and guide below.

However if you are searching for a Full tutorial on how to install and start a wordpress blog then please check out his tech blog post here.

Installing a good wordpress website premuim theme can create a lot of trust in your blog audience and you are much more likely to get repeat viewers/subscribers if you back it up with good and interesting content and relevant pics on your blog.

For those who are entirely new to this:

What is a WordPress theme?

It’s essentially is a way to “skin” your blog. You could say its like a dress, you change the dress and the blog looks different. You could make your website look like a recipe blog, A photography blog just by changing its theme (design) in just a few clicks. It can also be called as a template or premade custom design.

The WordPress Theme Directory is the official site for WordPress Free themes. There are Custom designers or programmers can charge $500 and upwards for a design, while you can get pre made designs for as low as $10 for a WP design , or annual memberships that are as low as $79 for 80 + premium themes or then it can also go as high as $250 a Wp Theme.

The theme as such merely changes the look and design of the blog and not how the WordPress-CMS works.

Installing or Adding New and Paid WordPressThemes using the Admin Dashboard

You can download Themes directly to your blog by using the Add New Themes option in the Appearance sub-menu within your word-press.

1. Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.

2. Select the Appearance panel, then Themes.

3. Select Add New.

4. Either use the Search or Filter options to locate a free or paid theme you uploaded that you would like to use.

5. Click on the Preview link to preview the Theme or the Install Now link to upload the Theme to your blog,

6. Or use the Upload link in the top links row to upload a zipped copy of a Theme that you have previously downloaded to your machine

Paid Vs Free themes

WordPress currently comes with three themes that you can install from within the blog and their default themes are Twenty Fifteen theme, and previous defaults Twenty Fourteen theme and Twenty Thirteen theme.

I recommend Three paid themes providers that I know are of value in price and quality as I have been using them for 8+ years now. They are listed below

Solostream themes – www.solostream.com

They are very robust themes that are built from the ground up using proper wp architecture and hardly need any updating , besides they have very flexible advertising options to use banners or affiliate links –which you can turn off if you don’t want to use. They look very professional and can integrate all your social media buttons

Elegant themes – www.elegantthemes.com

They are premium themes and have the best pricing on the internet for wordpress themes, you just pay $79 and you can use any of their 80+ WP premium themes on how many ever blogs you want. They have a wide range of themes from e-stores , to recipe blogs themes and much more.

Themeforest – www.themeforest.net

They not only have themes but also have a vast collection of wp plugins and scripts. They also have templates for free blogging platforms like , blogpsot , tumblr any many more. They have templates starting from $5 right upto $200+

I prefer to used paid themes, because they are updated much more regularly, specially if any security hole is found out , you get an immediate update. While free themes are not often updated and so can also break with word press updates and therefore break your blog.

Installing new themes via CPanel or then FTP

To add a paid theme to your WordPress installation via Cpanel, here are the steps:

Most webhosting companies offer a cPanel control panel, and most paid themes come in a .zip or .gz archive. This is assuming that your theme-download is a compressed (.zip) file containing a folder under which all the Theme files exist in.

1. Download the Theme .zip file to your computer.

2. In cPanel File Manager, find and go to your Themes folder. If your WordPress is installed in the root folder of your web server you would navigate to “public_html/wp-content/themes” and if you have WordPress installed in a sub-folder called wordpress or named something else , you would navigate to “public_html/wordpress or something else /wp-content/themes”.

3. Find the Themes folder in cPanel File Manager, click on Upload file(s) and upload that .zip file from step 1

4. Once the .zip file is uploaded, click on the name of that file in cPanel, then in the panel to the right, click on “Extract File Contents”, and that .zip file will be uncompressed in your wp installation and ready to use.

5. Just login to your blog via admin panel – got to appearances themes and select the theme you uploaded and click activate. Your new theme is installed on your blog and ready.

To add a paid theme to your WordPress installation via FTP, here are the steps:

1. Download the Theme archive (normally zip file) and extract the files it contains. Do not change the the directory structure in the archive when extracting these files. Check if any special installing guidelines are provided by your Theme author in this directory.

2. Using an FTP Software – login to your hosting web server. Your hosting company should have given you this ftp login details when you installed your blog and created a ftp login.

3. Upload the Theme files you extracted to the wp-content/themes directory on your host server. Your this folder will now have different theme folders Eg recipe theme, elegant tech theme under this main theme folder.

4. Once the theme is uploaded to directory, just login to your blog via admin panel – got to appearances themes and select the theme you uploaded and click activate. Your new theme is installed on your blog.

5 FREE SEO tools and case study of your ranking and banking keywords

There is SEO and then there is SEM, but you pretty much need both to succeed. The good thing is that most big players in the search engine optimization game offer free research tools to their punters to try/test out their tools before buying.

These are the popular softwre companies like SEO MAJESTIC, AHREFS, SEM RUSH and MOZ.com

No prizes then for guessing which of these are my favourites

1. Ahrefs.com

2. Semrush.com

3. Moz.com

4. Seomajestic.com

5. Alexa.com (not a tool – Nielpatel – but he thinks that this also pulls the most relevant keywords from your blog)

Yes my likeability for them is pretty much in that same order. Now I have not been able to afford a full membership, because many of them start at a price between $69 to $150 a month which is a bit steep to me, but you on the other hand – if you have the money go ahead and try it.

I would like to try SEMRUSH if I had the chance & money as i like their interface and they are updating their indexed URL at a good pace to compete with the top guns( You know one of my wish list now – so feel free to buy me one :)

Anyway back to what I intended to show you today, how good is the data really on these SEO tools providers. I am going to compare them to the big daddy of data hoarders (Google webmaster tools and analytics) as google pretty much knows which website is doing what and have the most data on the internet on websites.

It’s pretty simple what I’m doing here

I go to stat counter and webmaster tools and then sync my keyword data from Google to what I have in stat counter dashboard and have a look at the merged and comparison keyword data in stat counter ( click link to see how its done).

This then will give me the keywords that are bringing in the most traffic to my blog and I can see which ones are bringing in the revenue.

Next : I do a comparison of these keywords against these SEO tools. I enter my blog url in SEM rush, Ahrefs etc and see if any of them picks up (keywords) that i found via the data matching i did with & found from Google and statcounter data

What I am trying to do here?

The aim of this case study is to find out – if any of the above listed seo tool providers can find out/match the ranking and banking keywords that I have got from GOOGLE WEBMASTER TOOLS/STATCOUNTER (merged) from doing a search on their webpage without signing in on their full membership. So pretty much we are trying to gauge – how good they are with the little data they are giving out before a person signs up to their membership plan for the full data.

Now I’m not going to use my sites for this experiment, even though I have used one of them… but im replacing some keywords with say Dominos pizza kinds of site keywords to make it interesting.

So the keywords will actually reflect the actual case study I have done for actual money maker & Google ranking keywords – but replaced it with pizza keywords

So let’s say those keywords (from stat counter and GWT merged data) were

So my data tells me that this is the money maker (Google ranking) keywords and I need to check with the big guns (Ahrefs, SEM rush etc if they can find that out) with a URL check.

::::::: I did these checks without logging into any of these providers’ websites::::

( I refer to snapshot page in this post as the first results page of the SEO tool provider after I enter url an click enter for results to display )

SEMRUSH

I put in the URL of the website and do a search on semrush.

So Semrush has one of the organic keywords (Raw prawn chia seed pizza) in their list that matches my GWT/statcounter keyword. But point to be noted is that they have many more organic keywords listed for the website but it can be seen only with a full SEM rush membership

[Additional note- Semrush gives you a basic snapshot of also your MAIN ORGANIC COMPETITORS so you can also spy on your competitors for their keywords]

Ahrefs

It gave no keyword data that matched my GWT/statcounter keywords.

I think SEM RUSH did a better job of listing my top 10 competitor’s urls, considering that the domain name I compared for this case study was a .com.au Australian domain. SEM rush returned not only Australian competitors but also relevant .com competitors in their snap shot, while the Ahrefs Top 10 competitors didn’t look relevant at all

[Additional note- Ahrefs give you a good look at the rising numbers of referring pages in their snapshot page .A steady rise in this number is good for SEO. It also gives you a good idea of how you’re US and UK organic traffic is increasing in numbers – under organic traffic heading and chart]

Seo Majestic

They didn’t provide any keywords in their snapshot page, but under pages column in snapshot the three urls/pages were present there that were the get/statcounter keywords pointing to those pages. Only somewhat helpful – not much ( and that is only because I knew what I was looking for , so wish they actually listed what keywords the website is organically ranking for in the snapshot page like the rest )

[Additional note – they do give a trust flow and citation flow ranking , but what I like is their pretty colourful charts showing backlink breakdown and anchor text breakdown – their backlink history graph can also be useful for SEO]

Moz.com

Moz did not give me any matching keywords on their open site explorer page. They did not list any keywords for website in their snapshot page

[additional note – Moz does a good job of giving you a Domain authority (DA) and Page authority (PA) score – I like the spam analysis they did on linking sites – which is sites linking to you, these can be good if you want to disavow (remove) links that are bad and linking to you]

Alexa.com

Alexa.com didn’t give me any keywords that matched. They had five different keywords to what I got from GWT/statcounter.

I did not get any matched keywords to my GWT/Statcounter Keywords for the 5 keywords that they pulled of my website, so there you go (nielpatel)

[Additional note : I like the way how alexa give s you a global rank and show you if it’s been climbing high recently and also the stats of how much time people are actually spending on your website (How engaged are visitors) which can give you an idea of bounce rate and if you should improve content + also — > Which sites did people visit immediately before this site?]

Now I do know that I could possibly get much more relevant keywords and ranking data from these SEO DATA providers after signing up for a membership, but aren’t these companies supposed to provide good free data to entice us signing up for their full membership with their free SEO snapshot. Most failed in this and so there is plenty of marketing opportunity to improve I suppose for them.

I hope you have got something useful from this case study , as you can see I prefer to use sem rush for my SEO needs and also use other tools like AHREFS, Seo majestic etc to compare results . Whats different between fixed betting and tote betting ?

TOTE BETTING

The Tote (also known as Parimutuel betting) is commonly used for horse racing, while the fixed odds betting is commonly used for sports. Saying that tis is a system in which all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool

In Australia with the Tote the bookmaker displays the approximate odds that they believe you will receive on a punt . This approximation of the value is based on the quantities of bets received to that point. These odds however will change, however depending on how much additional money is placed on each outcome or horse. Because of this you don’t know the actual odds you will get until bets are no longer accepted and the race/event has commenced.

Fixed odds betting

Fixed betting is pretty much what it says , returns are fixed at time of betting . In Australia fixed odds betting is a form of wagering where the punter knows the exact odds he or /she will receive when they place a bet

Fixed odds betting is more risky for the bookmaker than the Tote, because the profit margin is not guaranteed and the bookmaker’s profit will not be the same for every outcome.

Win

A win bet is an option where the selected horse must win the race outright. In the case of a dead-heat, the winning price will be halved. The most common type of online bet, the win option gives punters a chance to make full use of the bookmakers promotions. These include money back specials and protest payouts; if you’re horse finishes second or third in a selected race they will refund your win bet and if your horse loses on a protest, they will pay out both win bets.

Place

A place bet offers lower odds than a win bet, due to the increased likelihood of it succeeding. The selected runner must finish in the first three across the line for the bet to pay out. If there are less than seven horses in the field, then only the first two horse’s payout, however odds will increase because of this.

Trifecta

Punters must select the first three horses in any order. Due to the increased risk factor of this bet, the payouts are of greater value compared to quinella’s. A three-horse boxed trifecta costs $6, or $3 for .cents worth (the most commonly made trifecta). There are multiple options for trifecta bettors including straight, boxed, banker and roving banker
