How to improve your internet security in this modern day and age

September 16, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Sometimes we get feedback from people who wonder what all the internet security fuss is about, they don’t quite understand why their tried and tested methods for online safety need to change. They haven’t had much trouble so far, so why the big push to improve internet security?

metdata vpn security

There are some tried and tested methods for good Internet security such as downloading your normal anti-virus software packages. But downloading a piece of software without knowing what it does just is not good enough anymore in this day and age – where new technology means that black hat hackers are always around the corner to steal your personal data, or 3rd party agencies are stealing your internet browsing habits.

Try and imagine a world where everything you are doing online is being looked at by someone else, to build up a personality portfolio of you – and analysed to see how much of a threat you are…Scary!

Now meta-data surveillance (the practice of looking at, and analysing personalities through browsing habits) may be good to counter black hat and criminal activities – but data surveillance also means that what you do online now, could be held against you in court in 10-20 years.

This is how internet and online security has evolved over the last few years, and this is why more recently, there have been a spate of celebrity hacks, such as the recent iCloud hacking incident.

Below we try to outline the good, the bad, and the ugly so that Internet users can make more informed security choices and understand the differences between traditional internet security and more contemporary ways to browse anonymously.

Traditional Software

Soft-ware such as antivirus, firewalls and cleaners are the three top tried and tested Internet security staples for any internet security conscious browser. As long as they are downloaded from the correct sources and are kept updated, they will serve and protect for the long term.

It’s recommended that the only time that a user needs to change any of these tools is if the provider is no longer offering support, if they are found to have misled users about their products, or if the tool no longer suits the user’s online activities and can therefore no longer provide adequate protection.

However antiviruses, firewalls and hard drive cleaners only serve to protect what is downloaded from the internet. A normal net savvy consumer would have no problems avoiding downloading these viruses. So what else can be done to protect your browsing activities?

New Must-Haves

As mentioned in the first paragraph, it may be difficult for some hardened users to give up their current methods of internet security in favour for newer means. A more modern method of protecting internet security is through VPN tools. VPNs are more than just office network access tools. They have evolved over the past decade to become one of the most useful personal Internet security tools available.

How it works is that a VPN (virtual private network) uses remote IP locations around the world to mask the users IP address. Therefore 3rd party individuals can’t ‘snoop’ or look at what you’re looking at while you’re using your VPN.

There are stories in the U.S of 3rd party ‘interceptors’ which basically intercept your unencrypted internet network in order to steal your data and browsing habits. This is becoming increasingly commonplace, to the point where if you were to buy a book (1984 by George Orwell for example) on Amazon – every single government body in the world would be able to see your purchase.

The Internet is an Increasingly Ugly Place

The first rule of security is staying on your toes. Internet security has grown too far more than what you download, but more of what you are exposing to the world.

People who are looking to steal your data isn’t now just the criminals looking to steal your bank details, or implant a harmful virus into your machine – but information agencies, looking to steal your meta-data and use it against you with or without your permission.

Multiple personalities? How to protect your identity online

November 12, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

We’ve all heard the stories about people who have had their identities stolen, whether it is their credit card details, their email address, Social Security number, or their driver’s license or passport. Identity theft isn’t just something that you hear about on the news though – in today’s high-tech society, it’s becoming easier for thieves to steal your identity online.

protect yourself online with McAfee® All Access

Restrict access with McAfee® All Access

When you shop online, you input your name, credit card details, and address – and it’s the same when you do your online banking, or fill out account registration forms. Our personal information is scattered across the web, which means we could be all the more susceptible to thieves who are operating online.

However, there are ways to ensure your information is kept secure. If you want to protect your identity online, here is some information that will help you.

Firstly, why should I care?

In the US, a 2010 report found that 11.1 million adults were a victim of identity fraud. What’s more, every three seconds, an identity is stolen and in 2008, Americans incurred $54 billion in loss from identity theft.

Identity theft can occur through credit card charges, bad credit, loss of social security benefits, criminal charges (such as traffic violations or criminal records), and even medical theft. In 2009, it was estimated that one in four Americans is expected to become a victim of identity theft.

How do thieves steal your identity online?

There are multitudes of ways thieves can steal your identity online, even if the websites you are visiting have security measures in place.

Thieves can send phishing emails or instant messages (SPIM) that pretend to be from a legitimate person or organisation (such as Paypal) in an attempt to lure you to give personal information. Hackers could also install spyware, Trojan horses, or malware into your computer that can take control of your computer or direct you to invalid sites.

On top of this, thieves can install keyloggers onto your computer that log your keystrokes so hackers can record your passwords and credit card details as you type online. Also, if your wireless network at home is unsecured, thieves can use this to access data on the computers you have connected to your wireless router – this is known as Wardriving.

So how can I protect myself?

If you’re reading this and panicking, don’t despair – there are measures you can take to protect yourself online!

First off, be aware! Make sure you are aware of all the different online tricks and scams that thieves can use to obtain your personal information – this way you’ll know what to look for. Keep your personal data private and never disclose it to strangers, and also make sure to check the URL of websites before you enter any vital information. Ensure your passwords contain letters and numbers, secure your wireless network, and don’t log into banking and credit card sites while using public hotspots.

When browsing the web, use a comprehensive antivirus software such as McAfee Total Protection Software, which will protect you from spyware, malware, and viruses, as well as steer you clear of any fake websites that are trying to get your personal information. Also remember to use a firewall to block any unauthorized access to your computer or network.

If you do become a victim…

…it’s best to notify the credit bureaus and create a fraud alert, and also file a police report. Be proactive as well and contact any financial institutions or agencies where your accounts may be affected. In the worst case scenario, put a credit freeze in place or consider legal help – after all, your identity is on the line!

Have you or any of your friends or family been a victim of identity theft?

Email Virus going around

May 16, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Not to sure  about how this is being spread  , but  the way its been spreading  it definitely looks like a “email virus” . First my sis   started spamming me ..  unintentionally offcourse because somebody else was doing  it from her email account.

Email virus spreading

I contacted her immediately to know that she had not sent me that email , soon enough  my other sister would  got infected  and she too started sending me spam emails .

virus_email

Now the only way  i see it is , she possibly  got infected from the previous email sent  from my other sis hacked account , because that email went to everyone on her list. Now possibly  people clicked on that link in that email  and  got the virus  and  then  the virus continued to attack that person email list  and email everybody else from  this new list.

How to avoid this  email virus ??

Email virus that sends out emails with links

Questions i got asked from  friends !!

1.I was infected by some kind of virus which started sending out emails like crazy. What puzzles me is why I don’t see any sent messages in my MS Outlook ( this could be hotmail or yahoo mail as well)? How is the virus sending email and not using the email program? And is there a way to block the computer from sending email…at least long enough to search for the right tools to fix such a problem?

2. My yahoo email is sending out links that i didnt send (virus?)

Answer: It is not uncommon for these sophisticated virus’ to include their own smtp email program or just login to send messages from your account without any traces. Other reason could be Your pc could very well be seriously infected and even owned by some bot-net.

The three things you need to do

  • First is how to stop the outgoing traffic
  • Second is how to clean up your system.
  • U need to learn how to keep it from happening again

Do this by : Clean your pc with a antivirus , change your password and keep a anitvirus that also scans emails and keeps your browser safe always active on your pc

iF you want to be even more secure or take more precatutions

Immediately change your email password, security questions, and if you have a secondary email account associated with it change that as well.
There are a number of reasons that can explain how your account got hacked:

  1. Your password was easily guessable
  2. You entered your credentials into a phishing site
  3. The website where you had your account had a security breach
  4. Your hacked account used the same password as a different, breached site
  5. There is spyware on your computer

You can tell if your account has been hacked if:

  1. The recipients of the spam-email includes a bunch of people you know
  2. You try to access your account and the password no longer works
  3. You try to access the “Forgot Password” link and it does not go to the expected email
  4. Your Sent Items folder contains a bunch of spammy emails you’re not aware of sending

Someone’s sending emails from my email address! How do I stop them

Don’t click e-mails with suspicious links even if it came from someone you know.( if in doubt email them via another  sms, email or Facebook etc and confirm if they sent that email before clicking the link)

Update the to and from field in your email if  the email is sent to many people , proceed with caution.

Update your browsers

Update your   Anti virus ( if you don’t  have one get the free  AVG antivirus Or Avira free one

Run a a whole pc  antivirus scan if you have a antivirus

Review of Anti-Virus for PC – Norton 360 Multi-Device

February 28, 2013 by admin 3 Comments

Norton antivirus , AVG Antivirus , McAfee antivirus, Kaspersky, there are numerous software’s available to defend  your computer against the internet baddies and choosing the right one makes you spoilt for choice. There  has been numerous big corporate tech companies  that have been  at the receiving end of hackers recently. Google , yahoo and many big companies  have been in the news  for systems being compromised.  But its not only the big companies that can get attacked by hackers and viruses but also the home user who is at risk nowadays.

Security threats  an viruses are just around the corner on the Internet these days and protecting your computer against them is compulsory because as long as you surf the internet  your pc can be vulnerable to  attack and viruses. Whenever you go online , visit a website ,download a file, click a link,  your PC is in danger of getting infected by various types of malware and viruses. A secure software is required to defend your pc or computer  against worms, Trojans and hackers.

I have used Norton internet security before  and i used avg  antivirus before i  again switched to  the NEW Norton 360 Multi Device. I received a copy  to review  and i was hooked once again  to my favourite antivirus , just because they have tweaked the anti-virus  quite a bit  to use the least power available from your pc to run the software and also making the running of the antivirus very smooth and unobtrusive to normal internet surfing.

Norton 360 Multi-Device

The first thing that immediately got my attention when i got  the software was that the Norton 360 multi device not only offers protection for your desktop computer , but also can be used to protect your ipad or iphone  or android device and that’s surely a bonus. With fast internet on smartphones and tablets now available  you need to secure all these devices with a antivirus software solution, as they all store personal information and passwords  that can easily get stolen.

Norton 360 Multi-Device combines powerful PC, Mac®, and mobile device protection into a single, software packaged solution, so you can safely surf, shop, share, and socialise online, no matter which device you use. It protects against viruses, unsafe websites, and other threats. This software can also be used to create backups for your most important files and folders, to the location you specify

Screen shot of the  software and protection it offers

Key features that i like in this software package is

  • It lets you remotely lock and locate a lost or stolen mobile device and even erase the Stuff on it to ensure your private information stays that way
  • It backs up files stored on your PC
  • Defends your PC from threats and harmful websites and scans your email for threats
  • Browse, shop, bank, and socialize online with 24/7 security
  • One locations  to easily manage protection for all of your devices.

If you wondered how all this is done , its all in the cloud nowadays and the Cloud-based management brings it all together, letting you easily control your protection for your various devices from one convenient place on the Web.

This software package includes an antivirus tool, firewall, anti-malware, a backup system and a PC tune up utility, all the necessary elements needed to protect you against any threat. To keep your pc running  smoothly you often need to tune it up  and with this software package you don’t need to get another separate tuning  software to tune up your pc , Norton 360 has a tune Up section module  which provides a set of utilities for disk optimization, temporary file clean-up, diagnostic report, or start-up manager. These are meant to optimize your system, resulting in improved execution speeds and overall improved performance.

Here are some requirements for this software

· 300-MHz or faster processor
· 256 MB of RAM
· 300 MB of available hard disk space
· CD-ROM or DVD drive (if not installing via electronic download)

Try it  and you will not  go back , it retails for  anywhere between AUD $129.95 (1 year protection for up to 5 devices)

DNS CHANGER– Is my computer affected By malware ( Dont lose Internet Access)

July 6, 2012 by admin 1 Comment

A quarter-million computer users around the world could lose  Internet access on Monday 09/07/2012 , due to a malware( or virus ) that has infected computers the world over.

Avoid losing your internet with DNS CHANGER

There are fears of a potential "blackout" and describing the Alureon malware as the "Internet Doomsday" virus. These  viruses were designed to redirect Internet traffic through rogue DNS servers controlled by criminals

On November 8, the FBI, arrested several cyber criminals who distributed DNS changing viruses, variously known as TDSS, Alureon, TidServ and TDL4 viruses.

The botnet operated by Rove Digital altered user DNS settings, pointing victims to malicious DNS in data centers in Estonia, New York, and Chicago. These malicious DNS servers would give fake, malicious answers, altering user searches, and promoting fake and dangerous products.

Because every web search starts with DNS, this virus showed users an altered version of the Internet on thier browsers

Viruses such as Zeus and SpyEye, which infect millions of PCs and are used to commit financial fraud have also been spreading sometimes via the cloud

How to fix up and check if you are affected by DNS CHANGER

Information on how to identify and clean up infections can be found on a website that a group of security firms and other experts set up: http://www.dcwg.org.

Three great Free anti virus software for you as good as the paid ones

November 29, 2011 by admin 1 Comment

These antivirus programs are free and made by legitimate software producers  and  if you are thinking why they  are giving it free, there is a reason.  Like  all strugglers you have to provide top class service  to get the top position and its no different for these Antivirus software makers. They are not strugglers  but already established  antivirus  vendors but they want more people to try their software  before they can buy the full versions  and so they are giving their software away for free. If you like it  and want a buy a premium version ( with some extra features ) you will have to pay for it otherwise it remains free.

3 Free antivirus  Software providers

These links below will take you to these free antivirus download website pages

1. AVG Antivirus

Avg antivirus free version download

2. Avira Antivirus

Avira Free antivirus download prices free version

3. Avast antivirus

Avast antivirus download free version

Some of these Antivirus  are as good as the established players in this market like Mcafee antivirus , Kapersky Anti virus and Norton antivirus  and infact offer some innovative features that they don’t as well. These free software also scans your computer for rootkits  which is awesome  and is  also considered a premium feature in some software’s.

Infact i was so impressed with  one of these free programs ( AVG antivirus ) that  i went ahead and bought  a full version AVG antivirus  for $39.99  from the internet from amazon  and is it going great. Full version of these other free software are also available on Amazon

There is also a  tool from Trend micro to do a online scan  on your computer by downloading thier software you can check out more about it here.
