the emails wars to begin

November 12, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

First it was yahoo mail  and hotmail at war , then came gmail  to add to the competition  and if rumors turn true the biggest tech 2 website explosion on the internet “facebook” could be joining the ranks to get a big slice of one of the biggest share of this technology on the internet.

Faebook rumoured to enter email business

If facebook gets it right , it could immediately pull a big chunk off the email market  from its rivals  from whom it has already been able to pull internet time off users , by becoming one of the most popular  website on the internet.

facebook

Internet is buzzing with reports that Facebook is all set to launch its GMail rival next week. According to Techcrunch, Facebook’s secret Project Titan — a Web-based email client is launching on coming Monday alongside personal @facebook.com email addresses for users.

microsoft-vs-google vs face book

Is facebook email launching ?

The current Facebook messaging service is not he best  and not regarded as a proper email tool by many as apparently it takes a lot of time to delete or manage e-mails.
Recently, Google blocked Facebook from accessing its API, preventing users from importing contact information from Gmail to Facebook.

Rumors are that facebook are going to upgrade thier email service  to make it more useful and easy for people to use it as a full blown email service right from their face book portal. This could flag a new email wars on the internet.

wpmu WORDPRESS 3.0 AND BUDDY PRESS- PART 3

June 26, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

Whats new with wordpress 3.00 , WPMU and buddy press

THE GAME HAS CHANGED.  WITH THE RELEASE OF wordpress  3.0 my plan to install and work with WMPU and buddy press has been taken to a entirely new level.

If you have been following my blog , my previous posts ( Part 1 Part 2 ( this one )  == Part 3 to come ) you would know that i was posting my journey to get  WordPress multi sites installed on my blogs and also a review of wordpress and installation procedures and tips and advice.

With the release of wordpress 3.0 , the game has changed and now  wpmu is shipped with your wordpress installation allowing you to make your wordpress blog into a multi user blog without having to go through a separate process to get  multi user wordpress blog installed.

I will be dumping my  previous multi user blogs  to go through the installation of the New wordpress 3  and  WPMU blogs with the new wordpress 3.00. so follow me as  i  go through this journey once again.Hopefully this time it will be quick and with less bugs and technical  obstructions and problems.

wordpress 3.00 WPMU and Buddy press

Here are  the new features in wordpress 3.00

  • WordPress and WordPress MU have merged, allowing the management of multiple sites (called Multisite) from one WordPress installation.
  • New default theme “Twenty Ten” takes full advantage of the current features of WordPress.
  • New custom menu management feature, allows creation of custom menus combining posts, pages, categories, tags, and links for use in theme menus or widgets.
  • Custom header and background APIs.
  • Contextual help text accessed under the Help tab of every screen in the WordPress administration.
  • Ability to set the admin username and password during installation.
  • Bulk updating of themes with an automatic maintenance mode during the process.
  • Support for shortlinks.
  • Improved Custom Post Types and Custom Taxonomies including hierarchical (category-style) support. (Try the Custom Post Type UI or GD Custom Posts And Taxonomies Tools plugins to see the possibilities.)
  • A lighter admin color scheme to increase accessibility and put the focus more squarely on your content.

and here is a nice breakdown of the new features that  wordpress 3.00 has at this blog here >> Nettutsplus blog and for the official wordpress 3.0 features and highlights page go here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_3.0

Installing multi sites (network ) Like WPMU on wordpress 3.00

In wordpress 3.00  the WPMU feature is called creating network

Create a Network

In WordPress 3.0, you now have the ability to create a network of sites. To enable the Network menu item, you must first define multisite in the wp-config.php file.

Open up wp-config.php and add this line above where it says /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */:

define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

Notes

  • Giving WordPress Its Own Directory will not work in WordPress 3.0 with multisite enabled. It interferes with the member blog lookup.
  • You cannot create a network in the following cases:
    • “WordPress address (URL)” is different from “Site address (URL)”
    • “WordPress address (URL)” is used IP address such as 127.0.0.1 or port number other than ‘:80’, ‘:443’.
      • Use ‘localhost’ instead of ‘127.0.0.1’, if on local computer.

(See wp-admin/network.php network_step1() for more detail)

check for more detqails here : http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

Google sitemaps and wordpress 3.00 Multiuser blogs problem

———————————————————

Goggle sitemaps plugins does not seem to work with the multisite  installed as of now .. check this space for further news. I got this message when i activated wordpress 3.00  network ( or wpmu)

Google XML Sitemaps is not multisite compatible.

Unfortunately the Google XML Sitemaps plugin was not tested with the multisite feature of WordPress 3.0 yet. The plugin will not be active until you disable the multisite mode. Otherwise go to active plugins and deactivate the Google XML Sitemaps plugin to make this message disappear

Incidentally i did have a problem with the wp-config not saving in its original format after applying the multi user code . and tried another fix  i  copied the code into wp-config and just closed notepad and it asked me to save and i clicked yes ..instead of saving first ( it getting changed )and  then closing.. you will understand this better only if you also run into this problem

Get Multi user blogs on wordpress

June 6, 2010 by admin 1 Comment

I wanted to create something like this for a long time and i was looking in all the wrong places. I searched for  “wordpress cms themes” on google I searched for “forum blogs” and “multi user blogs” etc but got nowhere. The suddenly while browsing one of my favorite  forums i chanced upon a thread  “wpmu Blogs” and ended up doing more research.

Buddypress & WPMU for multi user blogs

Turns out , its just what  i was looking for so long. With “WPMU” or “wordpress Multi blogs” you can install it have have thousand of wordpress blogs from that one install and give permission to their people to run blogs of their own under your domain or hosting.

in my quest for this new  multi user blog i also  came across the “buddy press plugin” , for which i did not know much about and got it added to  my wordpress install. Turns out it give nice added functionality  like unique user profiles can be set up, and  you can  have your own activity rss feed  and connect to other users of the blog. So buddy press is certainly a good plugin for a more interactive blog.

Buddy press sample Wpmu demo

If you install buddy press on a WPMU which is a multi user blog , you get many more added benefits liek a very large  blogging community that can speak  and interact with each other.

Secure your Facebook with proper privacy settings

May 19, 2010 by admin 4 Comments

MySpace recently has announced plans to simplify its privacy settings as it seeks to differentiate itself from social network rival Facebook, which is under fire over its privacy practices and recent privacy breaches due to facebook bugs.

Myspace said "We provide clear privacy settings, allowing not only restrictions on who can view their profile data, but also age restrictions to allow age separation of older and younger users.". The new Facebook features introduced last month include the ability for partner websites to incorporate Facebook user data, a move that would further expand the social network’s presence on the internet.

Facebook privacy settings

Securing your facebook with settings -  A few key things to understand about friend lists:

  • You can add each of your friend to more than one Friend List
  • Friend Lists can have specific privacy applied to them
  • Your friends’ privacy settings will always default to the most restrictive friend list they’ve been placed in. For example, let’s say your friend John is someone you met at work but continue to hang out with outside of work. You may have placed them in your “Work Contacts” Friend List and your “Local Friends” Friend List. If your “Work Contacts” cannot see photos you’ve been tagged in and your “Local Friends” can, John will not be able to see photos you’ve been tagged in.

You can configure your Friend Lists by visiting the friends area of your Facebook.

Read the Facebook Guide to Privacy

At the very bottom of every page on Facebook, there’s a link that reads "Privacy." The linked page is "A guide to privacy on Facebook," which contains the latest privacy functions and policies. For example, with the latest changes in December 2009, Facebook discloses what it calls "Publicly available information." This is information that is publicly viewable to anyone visiting your profile, and includes sensitive information like your name, current city and gender.

When in doubt, use the "How others see you" tool on Facebook’s privacy guide to check and make sure your privacy settings are properly set.

Facebook’s new simple privacy settings page wants you to make all your posts and photos visible to the whole Web by default.

Show "limited friends" a cut-down version of your profile

You can choose to make people ‘limited friends’ who only have access to a cut-down version of your profile if you wish. This can be useful if you have associates who you do not wish to give full friend status to, or feel uncomfortable sharing personal information with.

If you’re not sure whether you’ve sufficiently protected what you share on Facebook, thenReclaimPrivacy.org has a bookmarklet to help you be as private as you’d like.

To run the bookmarklet and see how private you may or may not be on Facebook, simply follow these directions:

  1. Drag this link to your web browser bookmarks bar: Scan for Privacy
  2. Log in to facebook.com and then click that bookmarklet
  3. You will see a series of privacy scans that inspect your privacy settings and warn you about settings that might be unexpectedly public.

Facebook Privacy Scanner

For each area, ReclaimPrivacy will give you a green ("good"), yellow ("caution"), or red ("insecure") ranking. If you hit yellow or red, it’ll provide you with specific steps to fix the problem so you don’t have to waste time searching for the right setting.

I YOU STILL HAVE ANY CONCERNS  you can go tot face book privacy settings  page  on face book itself to see what you can  do to make your facebook more secure
