How to Save Streaming Videos From Netflix on a PC with Movavi Screen Capture Studio

November 28, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

In most cases it is really convenient to watch streaming videos on Netflix and all you need to do is fire up the app and choose the show that you want to watch. However if your internet is interrupted for whatever reason that could throw a spanner in the works – and unfortunately Netflix doesn’t give you the option to ‘save’ videos that you know you want to watch either.

screen capture

Movavi for Netflix

The good news is that while Netflix itself may not give you the option to save its videos, you can use Movavi Screen Capture Studio to do so regardless. Since it can be used to record videos directly from your screen, you simply need to set it up to record the Netflix video and then save it when it is done.

If you have never used a screen recorder in the past you might be concerned about how complicated it will be. In that regard Movavi Screen Capture Studio will certainly have you covered, as it is easy to step it up to download Netflix shows:

  1. Launch the software and select the ‘Capture screen’ option in the menu.
  2. Check that the speaker icon has a green checkmark on it so that it will record the system audio, or click it once if it does not.
  3. Click ‘REC’ when you’re ready and it will start recording after 5 seconds so you have ample time to play the Netflix video.
  4. Click ‘Stop’ when the video finishes, and then ‘Save’ to save it.

At times you may be too busy to sit through the recording and stop it when it is done, and if so the timer in Movavi Screen Capture Studio will come in handy. Also you can tweak the frame rate, or choose to capture keyboard and mouse actions – though that probably won’t be necessary when you simply want to save Netflix videos.

In addition to all that, Movavi Screen Capture Studio also includes its very own suite of editing features. Some of these may prove extremely useful, as they will let you cut and join video segments, enhance the video quality, apply special effects and filters, add customizable text, insert audio tracks, and more.

Suffice to say Movavi Screen Capture Studio will let you easily save any Netflix video streams so that you can watch it later – and do much more than that if necessary. Its flexible and powerful features coupled with its simple and intuitive approach makes it a great way to get into screen capture.

3 Ways to Secure Your Company Accounts

October 20, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

security for 2016 computersAccounts of companies, especially big-budget ones, getting hacked, are all over the news. That’s why you can never take your company’s security for granted. The minute you do is all the invitation criminal elements need to come out and play. Here are three ways you could keep your company accounts safe and protected from hackers and leaks.

Audits

These audits help protect your interests, says the Business News Daily. An audit can turn up any suspicious activity involving your assets. That way, they can launch an investigation to find out what the root cause of the problem or issue is. Simply got your account code wrong? They can fix that easily enough so you won’t have to. With regular audits, you can ensure your data is accurate and that you’re keeping your accounts well away from hackers.

Go on the cloud

More and more companies are putting their trust—and information—on the cloud. So should you. As cloud storage becomes the go-to option for many businesses—it’s easy to scale and a much more cost-effective option than upgrading tons of costly hardware—moving your information to the cloud is going to happen sooner rather than later. By doing it now, you can stay competitive with the rest of the companies doing the same thing, count on the same advantages and pass on those advantages, those cost-savings, to your customers. So don’t get left behind. Make sure your company knows how leverage current technologies to help you keep your data secure.

Encrypt and back it up

Don’t forget to have your data encrypted. That helps keep anyone out of your data. There are plenty of programs you can check out for this so look them up. Make sure you know how to protect your data well within the legal limits so you won’t have to worry about compliancy issues that could put your team and company in hot water. With encrypted video communications like BlueJeans—one of the leaders in video solutions—you can easily keep your data secure and out of reach. Also, make sure you back up every important piece of information. This way, even if a device is lost or gets compromised, your data would be safe. Just make sure you create a backup on a different device. That way, you can easily access any data or information you need.

Other important tips

security for small business against hackers

While those three tips are essential to keeping your data safe, here are other tips you might find handy as well:

· Get an anti-malware. This is a must for every security system. An effective anti-malware will keep sneaky scammers out of your system. No need to worry about your emails picking up an infection at some point and compromising your entire system.

· Make your hard drives unreadable. If there are any old data or information you don’t need, you can have all those disks shredded. Destroy old backups. That way, no one would ever have a chance to access any old data from your company’s old hard drives.

· Use a password. This might seem like a cliché but it’s the first step to ensuring your system is protected. So take that extra step. Lock your network with a password. This will make it more secure so you can easily work without any worries. However, in a bid to make sure it’s even more secure, go for passphrases instead of just single-word passwords. That gives another layer of difficulty for scammers in order help keep them out of your system. Also, don’t forget to regularly change your passphrases. This will make it even more difficult for scammers to get into your system and get up to some trouble.

· Use a firewall. This is a must-have for your online security, says the Entrepreneur. Firewalls block out dangerous programs along with viruses and spyware before they get into your network and wreak havoc in your system. However, make sure you’re setting up your communication infrastructure inside your firewall and not outside of it. The best one won’t be able to do anything if you set it up outside. Also, scammers and hackers will find it pretty easy to infiltrate your system. So don’t fall for that mistake. Be sure you’re setting it up inside your firewall.

· Always check the privacy settings. Any time you download or install a new program or software update, never fail to check out the privacy settings for each one. That way, you know what you and your team have to work with. This also helps you set any changes or adjust your setting in any way you want so you get the best results possible.

These are just some tips on how you could keep your company’s data safe. So if you want your data safe, start by putting these tips to good use.

Defence-in-depth – protecting us from ourselves

August 28, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

security for wordpress plugins themes with https and ssl

It really is astonishing how many cyber-attacks we hear about in the media. How can these companies that have become household names be so vulnerable to attack?

It’s a little bit disillusioning, in a lot of ways like finding out that a superhero isn’t real. We waggle our finger and chastise, but sometimes it’s worth taking a step back and looking at our own cyber hygiene. The tech industry is booming, and for a long time the mantra has been “how easy can we make this for the consumer?”. At the end of the day, this has done the average computer user a tremendous disservice. It’s all of our responsibilities to follow secure practices, and the best way to do that is to practice what the security community refers to as “defense-in-depth”.

By making sure that we follow secure practices every step of the way, we can protect ourselves from one or even many failing. Some of the biggest offenders might surprise you, and some you might have been aware of but never had it hit home exactly how this can be exploited. This article aims to take a practical approach at how failing to follow safe practices can easily be manipulated.

Thinking HTTP is okay on your local network:

security for wordc press websites in 2016Gone are the days where we can trust your local network. Each piece of equipment should be configured such that it believes every other piece of equipment is potentially malicious. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) has become a very popular paradigm for corporations, but it means that someone might bring an infected device onto the network. It’s absolutely trivial for say, malware to put the infected user’s NIC into promiscuous mode and sniff specifically for authentication over HTTP. Then, your credentials get stolen and possibly used to log into a machine that allows RDP access for all domain members (any machine).

Numerous privilege escalation attacks exist allowing the attacker to then simply monitor main memory (RAM) for juicier credentials. Always use https, for all of your communications, and ideally only allow ECDHE ciphers to allow for Perfect Forward Secrecy.

Not treating your private keys like a valuable:

As you should all know by now, SSL/TLS functions by establishing a shared session key (symmetric encryption) by forging a temporary secure channel via public key cryptography (asymmetric encryption). This relies on generating a public/private keypair.

The private key is known only to the secure web endpoint, and the public key is your certificate which must be signed by a trusted third party (a CA, like SSLTrust.AU) for browsers to mark it as safe to visit. What happens if you’re lax with the private key though? Well, it depends. If communication is over SSL/TLS with a cipher that utilized Diffie-Hellman with large enough parameters, you’re still safe.

This kind of cipher guarantees that even if the private key is compromised, the communication remains illegible by use of constantly changing session keys. Without this special kind of cipher though, an attacker could have been sitting on your communication for months, waiting for you to do something insecure like generating the keypair on your laptop and then leaving it in the open. Then, the attacker merely needs to open up wire shark, provide it with the private key, and can read the communication – passwords and all! Protect your private keys – they are passwords.

The best way to store these certificates is in an HSM – a hardware module that makes absolutely sure the key can never leave the device. They’re expensive, but if you can afford one they’re well worth it. Did you know that even if you mark a private key as non-exportable in Windows that it can still be easily exported?

Blindly trusting certificates, or worse, root certificates:

How many times has it happened to you? “Just click past the SSL/TLS warning. Trust the cert.” This one boggles my mind how many professionals don’t realize this – a self-signed cert is its own root certificate. They’re not inherently dangerous, in that if you take proper precautions you’re limiting your exposure, but how many of you realize that every time you add a self-signed cert to your root certificate store that that route certificate can now be used in conjunction with manipulating your routing in order to pose as legitimate for any site or service?

With an SSL/TLS intercepting forward proxy, an attacker can sit between you and any legitimate service, inspecting all traffic in the clear. All they have to do is control any hop before you get to the internet, and they can route through their own malicious service. If they can run an executable on your machine with an administrative user’s context, they can also poison your static route table and accomplish the same thing. If this happens, the only thing protecting you from sure ruin is that your browser does not trust the SSL/TLS cert of their malicious endpoint!

If you ever hop onto a free Wi-Fi hotspot, and it wants you to install something on your computer before you connect, it’s game over. That’s both protections from your traffic being decrypted transparently being stripped in one fell swoop. Make sure you don’t reuse keys between different services if it’s not needed, however tempting!

Not using Extended Validation certs for your business:

Hear me out on this one. I know that they’re more expensive and that we have a vested interest in selling them to you, but they really do make a difference. The extra verification procedures protect the end user against a lot of shenanigans – time and time again people are able to game automated systems that use a poor algorithm for choosing administrative contact email addresses for verification. Having to revoke a certificate, especially a wildcard certificate, that your clients trust can do a lot of harm to your reputation.

Conversely, extended validation certificates can help bring in security conscious clients who see that you’ve gone the extra mile for them to conduct business with you safely. They can’t see the measures you’ve got behind the scenes. They need to accept on blind faith that you hash and salt their credentials correctly. This is something they can see, and it does make a difference.

Security for your websites should definitely be a priority for your privacy and your users privacy, and while taking measures to minimize breaches make it more secure, there is no fool proof way to 100% secure a website.

Compare the Top Business Accounting and Bookkeeping Software for Australia

August 21, 2016 by admin 26 Comments

In Australia, before there were really only two players in the small business accounting software market, MYOB and QuickBooks with their traditional software.

However now, there are many more providers entering the market. I have prepared a  comparison of  some of the top accounting  providers below.

Today there is new accounts software providers like Xero and  Reckon and now even Quickbooks online and MYOB have  come on-board with fresh new products for managing your business accounts  and books.

These  providers now provide bookkeeping online and offline for sole traders, including preparation for business activity statements (BAS) lodgements for small business and invoicing software. This books software are also scalable for bigger companies, so if you grow quickly you already have more options.

Compare accounting and book keeping software for australia

Quite often , this new software’s are hosted in the cloud and do many tasks including maintaining your invoices, reconciling with your bank account and recording book keeping for you.

Many of these more traditional providers mentioned above have been doing books for a while, but now have upgraded their software to make it more flexible. Now, you can make use of  the new accounts software or apps  anywhere on the go with your ipad, smartphone or desktop at home.

If you are looking for software online for book keeping or accounting to do it yourself or with help from your accountant, then there are some good options available for you today.

New technology has made these book keeping programs and tools easier to use.

If your book keeper or accountant does not have access to the same software that you use, you could always export  the books and  then take it to him for any more technical or advanced  accounting that you need for him to look at.

I have this year purchased a few online book keeping + accounting software memberships for my own use and also trialled few of them to write this review so that you can benefit from my review.

This review is not in-depth, but covers and compares mainly the basic features  needed for sole traders and small business accounting and also price comparisons for membership/subscription.

I will be updating with a more in-depth reviews at a later stage

Should I do Book keeping myself or with an accountant

accounting software reviews australia

Thankfully most of the new packages for these accounting programs allow you to do your book keeping yourself or even share the program access of your books, so that your accountant can also access/check and submit it.

There are two ways you could use most new bookkeeping/accounting tools, if you’re a small business or sole trader, you can either buy the software in your name and share access with your accountant or then you can let your accountant buy the software or create a account for you via their accounting portal.

From online discussion on forums, they have been instances where some accountants have refused to release access to their clients books, as the accountant is the main registrant for the book keeping  software, so if you think this could be a problem then make sure you register your accounting software in your name (register as a subscriber with xero) and then give access to your accountant.

This way you will always have full access to your books without anybody being able to block you from it.

Small business accounting

If you’re a small business then you will probably need to do invoicing, bookkeeping, billing, expense recording. The choice you need to make is do I hire an accountant or do i do it myself.

With today’s new advanced software, you could easily give it a go yourself and if it doesn’t work out, you could always hire an accountant or bookkeeper.

The first thing you need to figure out is, If your accounting needs simple or more advanced features.  If you needed software to just produce invoices, record expenses, and do book keeping tasks then you can do it yourself with this online accounts software. If you need to do much more than that like claim deductions, depreciation calculations etc , you can still use this software, but check with your accountant if they will accept the data from your accounting software or be able to access it to complete the more complex bits for you.

We will list the prices and cancellation fees for these services so you can make an informed decision before taking the plunge.

With so many new software’s and so many different features in these accounting programs, how do you choose the right one?

Choosing the right software for you will depend on three main factors

1. Price

BAS Reporting

online book keeping in perth sydney victoria nsw

Most online providers  have packages that have a ‘BAS report’  that can be generated with a few clicks of the mouse and this report mimics the layout of the BAS form so you can even do away with paper  if you like and file it electronically via a feature called SBR (Standard Business Reporting), the Australian standard for business-to-government reporting).

Cons or limitations

Access limitations can present itself when an accountant refuses to give access to your books for any payment or other reasons, but this can be avoided as I mentioned before by registering the membership in your name and then giving him access , rather than doing this the other way around ( accountant registering it in his name and giving you access)

You don’t get all features with a membership and have to pay more for extra features. With some software it is still recommended to check your bank reconciliations the first couple of times just to make sure its all good, when you import your business transactions from bank account into software.

Not all MYOB packages can be used with Mac computers, so please check if your package is compatible with a mac computer or device before purchasing from any service provider.

Conclusion:

Most of these software’s, today are hosted on the cloud – which means you can login into your software from your smartphone, Ipad or desktop at home and update details anytime and anywhere and this makes it super convenient.

How can I cancel my account & terms and policy

Cancellation by service provider can be done if you violate their terms of service, but this normally happens only if you have done something seriously wrong to their software or website.

Users are also allowed to cancel their membership or registration according to the service provider terms and rules, which is different for each service provider and so we can’t cover this in details. Most of these service providers (Some links: QuickBooks , Reckon , MYOB , XERO ) provide a cancellation button from within their admin area when you login This can be had from the service provider on registration or from their website.

It is recommended that you export all of your data before cancelling your subscription with any of the accounts service provider.

Reckon cancellation policy:

*Accounts Hosted can be purchased on an annual or monthly subscription. New customers can sign up for one month use only and you pay on a month by month basis. Annual licence holders who wish to move to monthly pricing must cancel no later than 30 days before their expiry date.

Xero cancellation policy

Xero will send you a final bill after you’ve cancelled their subscription trial is free. You could always email them to see what your charges could be before cancellation. Instead of cancelling, you can reduce your monthly Xero subscription fee by downgrading your pricing plan. You can change back to a bigger plan at any time.

MYOB Cancelation

For cancellations, you can contact their customer service team on 1300 555 151. You can get more details about terms and conditions from the myob site over here

5 Best Apps to Help You Get Organised

July 31, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

Best NoteTaking apps 2016 smaller

Being organised is both a personal skill and a professional attribute. To some people it comes naturally — they live by their daily planner and never forget to print their tickets. To others, getting organised is a challenge and wearing mismatched socks is a regular occurrence.

That’s where technology comes in. We have smartphones and tablets to help us stay organised on the go, and computers to do the work at home or in the office. There are so many amazing apps out there, but the right solution for you will depend on what you believe to be your biggest challenge when it comes to getting organised.

Whether you need to take better notes, improve your team’s performance, backup your files, organise your life, or simply need a little something to stay focused, the trick is to identify your pain point, find an app, master using it, then move on to a new challenge.

As a starting point, here are 5 of the best apps to help you get organised.

Dropbox

Dropbox originally grew in popularity because it offered an easy-to-use and extremely functional method of file sharing. Attaching a document or photo to an email is easy enough, but when multiple files come into play it’s not the most efficient way of transferring files from one person to another.

However, for the purpose of getting organised, Dropbox is a lifesaver when it comes to backing up your files. Let’s be honest — no one has the time to connect a hard drive to their computer and patiently wait until their files are transferred across. That’s not to mention that you’re then dependent on two types of hardware, rather than letting a cloud-based software take on the backup role.

Once you’ve created an account online, you should install Dropbox onto your computer and it’ll appear in your files as a regular folder. When you transfer or copy files into this folder, they’ll automatically sync with your Dropbox account in the background, presuming you’re connected to the internet.

The best part is files are never truly deleted from Dropbox. One barrier to an organised file folder is keeping everything in there, thinking you may need it again in the future. With Dropbox, you have the option to restore files after deleting them.

best-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-dropbox.jpg

The downside to Dropbox is that it stops being free if you require more than 2GB of space. To get 1TB of space, you need to upgrade to Dropbox Pro, which costs AU$11.58/month or AU$13.99/month, depending on how whether you choose to get billed annually or monthly. It may seem like a lot but when you think about the cost of a 1TB hard drive that requires a lot more human intervention, it’s worth it.

If you’re an Apple fanatic, Dropbox works the same way as iCloud does. However, it can operate on multiple devices and it’s easy to use across different operating systems without having to take extra steps.

On that note, Google Drive is another option that works great with all operating systems, where your first 15GB are free. It has the added benefit of being able to create documents, sheets, and slides within the platform that can be shared, edited and updated in real-time.

If you’re not a naturally organised person, the extra features offered by Google Drive can be overwhelming and you’ll end up with a messy folder, which defeats the whole purpose of using Dropbox as an organization tool in the first place. I’ve also found that Google Drive rarely generates previews of files, so if you haven’t quite mastered the art of naming your files in a systematic way, this isn’t the best first step towards a cloud-based backup. I’d personally recommend starting with Dropbox, learning to love the cloud, and jumping to a more complex and more functional platform.

Trello

If you’re a visual person, Trello is definitely one of the best apps to help you get organised. The idea behind it is to create ‘boards’, and move things from one board to another, depending on its status. For example, you could have a low priority to-do list, a high priority to-do list, as well as lists for things that are in progress or completed.

You don’t have to do it this way — this was initially done to add an element of interactivity, where you drag and drop things from board to board in order to get more engaged with your tasks/goals and the processes involved in completing them. You can create a board for work, a board for home, a board for events etc. and simply view it as multiple to-do lists laid out in front of you.

best-online-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-trello.jpg

You can attach files, build checklists, and connect Trello to other apps with ‘Power-Ups’. These features are all available for free, if you sign up for the most basic version of Trello which was intended for personal use. If you’re using it as a business tool (it’s extremely popularly amongst marketing teams and product developers) you may want to look into the more advanced options.

Asana

Asana is a must-have organisation tool for any team. Think of it as a to-do list on steroids.

Every team member has a to-do list — you can add to your own list as well as to others’. You can create teams within the tool, and then individual projects within the teams. These projects can have their own project-specific to-do list, where all the tasks involved in the project are listed. These tasks are pushed into team members’ to-do lists when they’re assigned, with the ability to set deadlines, attach files, and add comments to each individual task.

It sounds complicated, but the ability to organise tasks via team, project, and team member can result in a much more efficient and effective way of getting things done. If you’re having trouble visualising it (I don’t blame you), Asana has an awesome range of intro videos, as well as tool-specific videos to help you.

best-online-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-asana.jpg

Asana has two packages: Free and Premium. If you have a team of under 15 people, definitely get stuck into it with the free version and master it before you add on more tools. It’s a lot harder to implement an organisation strategy with more people.

Evernote

Evernote is an old favourite and can be found on every list of the best apps to help you get organised. I’ve added it because for one thing it’s awesome, and for another, a lot of people aren’t aware of its full potential.

First up, it is essentially a note-taking app. I can’t deny that Microsoft hasn’t revolutionized the way we create documents with Word, but something about saving notes to a specific document often means we don’t revisit them — they get lost amongst all your other files and documents.

This is where Evernote comes in. You can keep all of your notes on one platform, where you can group them into general notebooks as a way to stay organised. You can search all your notes for something in particular, and also change your view to what works for you. It’s such a handy tool if you’re studying or working, particularly because you can share notes with others.

best-online-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-evernote.jpg

One of the best things about Evernote is that it’s entirely cloud-based, which means you don’t have to save anything. If organisation isn’t your forte, you can skip the ‘save your work’ step and not lose all your valuable notes in the case of a hardware failure.

This also means you can add to your notes off any device (presuming you have the app and are logged in) and it’ll all sync up on its own. You can switch between your phone, tablet, and computer and access all the same information.

The really nifty thing about Evernote (that a lot of people don’t know about) is that the company has built and acquired a lot of awesome tools that’ll make your Evernote experience all the more awesome. One of them is Web Clipper, a web extension which lets you screenshot web pages as you go. You can clip small sections or capture the entire page, and automatically store and organise them within Evernote.

Skitch is a similar tool, though it’s an app rather than an extension. It lets you screenshot elements but also label and draw on them. It’s not as efficient as Web Clipper in terms of the whole screenshotting process, but being able to add arrows, text, circles and more can be really useful.

best-online-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-skitch.jpg

Skitch was acquired by Evernote in 2011, and in 2016 Evernote discontinued the option to download Android and Windows versions of the software. This was done in order to move Evernote in the direction of a more integrated solution, rather than increasing the number of standalone apps it supports.

You can still get it on a Mac and I’d highly recommend using it if you need to create process documents for anything on the web, i.e how to create an account on a specific platform.

Another awesome tool (that’s sadly only for iOs users) is Scannable. It’s an iPhone app that lets you scan documents using your phone’s camera, which are then enhanced to produce high quality digital documents. These are synced to Evernote automatically.

In terms of pricing, start with the Basic model and test it out. If you’re leaning towards using Evernote frequently in a professional environment that involves presenting and collaborating with co-workers, you may want to look into thePlus, Premium, or Business models.

Momentum

Momentum is a Google Chrome extension, so technically not an app but I guarantee you that it’ll bring life to your browser. Every time you open a new tab, you’ll get a picturesque photo with an inspirational quote.

You’ll also get the time and weather at your current location, as well as an option to search Google (or Bing if that’s your go-to search engine) and a list of your favourite links.

You have the option to create a to-do list and a main focus for the day, so if you’re not ready to dive into the deep end with an organisation app, start here.

best-online-apps-to-help-you-get-organised-momentum.jpg

Remember: organisation won’t happen overnight

Downloading any of these apps will not instantly result in being organised. You have to be patient, make a consistent effort, and get into the habit of using the app to stay organised. The beauty of technology is that if one app doesn’t work for you, there are hundreds of others that you can try until you find what works for you.
