2019 is poised to be an exciting year on the technology front.

Let’s discuss 5 of the top tech trends you’ll want to track in the year ahead.

1. Blockchain

block chain au

We know of blockchain as the technology that facilitates Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies. However, the technology has countless other uses in business and industry. To give you one example, USA-based retailer Walmart recently announced they’ll be using blockchain as a means to track lettuce sold in their stores.

They’re implementing this tracking with the goal of preventing the spread of harmful e-coli. It will be interesting to see the variety of other ways businesses and governments will utilise blockchain in 2019 and the years ahead.

2. Australia’s National Broadband Network

nbn

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) is a big deal for Aussie consumers who have, up until now, had spotty internet access. It’s a particularly exciting development for those living in rural areas.

Adoption of the NBN isn’t a brand new trend, as its rollout has been ongoing for multiple years now. However, 2019 will bring the launch of the much-awaited NBN business satellite services. The NBN will also finish rolling out to Australians in Canberra and some other area in 2019. For users in these locations who haven’t yet switched over to the NBN, it is a critical trend to be aware of right now.

If you haven’t already hooked up to the NBN or switched over from your previous internet service provider, you’ll need to take care of that as soon as NBN plans become available in your area.

According to multiple reliable sources, including the Barossa Council and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, it’s important to make the switch if you want your land line phone and internet connection to continue functioning.

3. Cybersecurity

internet security

“Cybersecurity” is shaping up to be one of 2019’s top buzzwords as businesses and governments hasten to secure their data from hackers, thieves and cyber pirates.

As internet access becomes more commonplace across the globe, all the would-be criminals on earth are getting interested in giving hacking a try. Businesses of every size will need to invest heavily in information security infrastructure and talent if they hope to survive the approaching onslaught of cyber crime.

4. Machine Learning

Machine learning has a broad variety of actual and potential uses. We’re already seeing machine learning being used to improve accounting software, protect data, and fight money laundering.

In 2019, expect to see greater adoption and expansion of machine learning technologies across diverse industries.

5. Augmented reality (AR)

a reality 2018

Augmented reality has applications in a broad diversity of real-world situations, from e-commerce to healthcare to gaming to construction. Silicon Valley’s “tech giants” including Facebook, Apple and Google are investing heavily in this technology. It’s no wonder.

The technology is revolutionising the way we’re able to visualise important concepts, and we’ve only just begun scratching the surface of what is possible with this technology. 2019 will no doubt bring some amazing new advances in augmented reality.

These aren’t the only important tech trends to be aware of in the coming year, but they’re 5 of the most important trends you’ll want to track.

What other trends are you planning to keep an eye on in 2019? Let me know in the comments.

Breaking new payment technology PayID launches in Australia

April 28, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Want to pay a friend or family member some money you owe them. Pay Id is the new technology that is making this process easy. You can use this instant payment transfer technology on your phone , computer or ipad.

pay id australia new

All you need now to make a payment to anybody is their phone number or email.

Technology has been improving in leaps and bounds, with major banks now allowing  their customers to use their smartphones to withdraw money from ATM without bank cards (called cardless cash with commonwealth bank).  Westpac bank has their own version of cardless cash as well

Pay ID takes this one step  further  allowing you to pay anyone instantly.

How does PAY ID work?

You need to register your email or phone number with Payid in your bank account. I have a bank account with commonwealth bank, so I have trialled this feature with  their new pay id service and attached some snapshots below of how it works with commonwealth bank.

[Mind you no new technology is scam free and i will tell you a little story below, to make sure  you stay aware of scammers too. Keep reading 🙂 ]

How to register

To create a PayID you’ll need an eligible CommBank account, an Australian mobile phone number3 and the latest version of the CommBank app.

How it works

pay id block

Use PayID to receive money

To receive payments you’ll need to register your mobile number as a PayID using the latest version of CommBank app. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Friends and family will then be able to pay you through their own bank’s mobile or internet banking using your PayID.

Use PayID to send money

To send payments to someone else, they just need to provide you with their PayID.

This may be their mobile number however other PayID types may include email, ABN, ACN and landline phone number, depending on their bank.

Once you have registered your mobile phone number with pay id, you just need to click pay id link in your bank account on your smartphone or computer and click on pay someone.

It will give you the option of pay via email or phone. Tap or click one of them. If you click on use mobile number – Next screen will allow you to choose a contact number from your phone contacts.

Just choose the persons mobile number and set $$ amount and click pay.

Your done – you have just transferred money  to the other party

You will get an sms acknowledgement that you have sent money to that person and the person  receiving money will also get an sms telling them they have received money and how they can claim it.

[ You can only link one PayID to one account at one financial institution. For example, if you have two personal everyday bank accounts, you would need two unique PayIDs – one linked to each account.]

Want to know more about pay id ?

Demo by beyond bank

Here is what payid.com.au has to say about  their new payment innovation

PayID is a simple new service that makes sending and receiving money from your bank account a little bit easier. You create your PayID by choosing something easy

PAy ID is also linked  to the NPP ( the New Payments Platform ) , which has the ability to send each other money in “real time. BSB and account numbers will still exist, but individuals and businesses can create other identifiers, called “PayID“.

Why use PayID?

Transfer money to friends and family using their PayID as quickly and easily as you transfer money between your CommBank accounts.

  • Fast: Near real-time1 payments across participating banks
  • Easy: No more scrambling for your BSB and account number to get paid
  • Mobile: Available through the latest version of the CommBank app
  • Secure: Backed by our 100% security guarantee2
  • Simple registration: A few clicks and you’re ready

First time payments to a new payee may be held for up to 24 hours as a security measure.

What this means With NPP?

The NPP platform will remove the delays caused by weekends and public holidays and mean you can make transfers after business hours.

Around 60 banks, credit unions and building societies will begin rolling out services to their customers from today, with the number of financial institutions and accounts linked to the NPP progressively increasing over the coming months.

The Reserve Bank developed new infrastructure, the RITS Fast Settlement Service, to enable the settlement of NPP transactions between financial institutions in real time on a 24/7 basis across exchange settlement accounts at the Reserve Bank. The Reserve Bank is also an NPP participant with newly developed services utilising the NPP for its government customers.

Other payment platforms for online purchase and payments :

Alipay, which has an estimated 520 million active users, now supports payments in 27 currencies across 30 countries.

Android Pay has also been rapidly increasing in popularity.

Fraud risk with new PAY ID  technology

With any new technology there comes the risk of new frauds and scams happening too.  With Payid there will be concerns as payments happen in real time. The big concern  will be detecting fraudulent activity and if this can be prevented as well in real time. This will surely have to be looked into and managed well by the banks’ risk management area.

Payments on the New Payments Platform may be faster and easier to make, but will they be safer? Time will tell.

The fiverr website is not loading in my browser

July 12, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

Recently i have been struggling  with a problem with  the fiverr website, and this seems to apparently be a problem with many websites that use nginx or then just a corrupted cookie. Normally you would get some error sounding just like this below.

bad cookie

img from http://shupamalleo86.deviantart.com/Bad-Ass-Cookie

“Request Header Or Cookie Too Large”

“400 Bad request Nginx Chrome”

“cookie to big”

“400 Bad Request Request Header Or Cookie Too Large nginx”

These errors can  pop up in popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, IE and edge and its not the browser fault, but more like the error or corrupted cookie fault (BAD COOKIE!).

I visited fiverr.com  website below and go the first error above

go to fiverr

Sometimes just clearing the cache works, but at times, you may feel the need to delete or clear the Cache & Cookies for a specific website only – and not the entire Browsing History

What are cookies ?

cookie monsterCookies are small files which are stored on a user’s computer. They are designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer.

This allows the server to deliver a page tailored to a particular user, or the page itself can contain some script which is aware of the data in the cookie and so is able to carry information from one visit to the website (or related site) to the next.

How Do We Fix the  BIG BAD COOKIE Problem

What we are really trying to do is clear all the stored cookies and data  on your website for that particular website and see if its a corrupted cookie problem and delete the cookies. The cookies are generally served by the provider website , but could also get corrupted due to events on your system. so the best solution is to delete those cookies/data for that website and start afresh.( don’t worry this action will not affect your fiverr or  that website account or anything)

Here is how you fix this if you have been getting similar  errors in your browser trying to reach the fiverr.com website and getting 400 errors.

  1. Click on three dots (top right) in chrome browser
    Click on settings

1 advanced button in chrome

Click on advanced

2. Got to content settings

2 content settings in browser

3. Click on cookies

3 cookies area in settings

4. Scroll down to  all cookies and Site data

4 all cookies nd site data in chrome

Click in the search area and type fiverr

5 remove all cookies shown in chrome for website

– All Fiverr fiverr logo cookies will be shown
– you can just click on remove all cookies shown and remove all the fiverr cookies
Job done
You should be ready to login  to your fiverr website or website that’s is showing up errors now as cookies is clear, you could also  clear cache  if you like at this stage.

Remember when you clear cookies and site data, it will clear and stored passwords as well for that site, so you will have to re-login with your email and password once more.

If you are an Internet Explorer user, see this post: Delete Temporary Internet Files & Cookies for a particular domain.

If you are a Microsoft Edge user, then this browser does not let you delete cache for particular websites. You will have to delete the entire Browsing History & Cache.

You can also use CookieSpy, a freeware that lets you manage Cookies of all Browsers in one place. Use it to delete Cookies from a particular domain. You can get more details about it and download it from its home page. The home page offers two download links – TechSpot and CNET

Ralph Willgoss: Industry Expert Profile

February 27, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

February 22, 2016

Ralph Willgoss: Industry Expert Profile

Once a month we’ll be catching up with an industry expert to gain insight into what it’s like working in a particular industry.

This month we’ve turned our focus to IT and interviewed Ralph Willgoss, a Cloud Services Engineer for a video game developer located in the United Kingdom. Ralph commenced his career developing large corporate websites that featured Ecommerce and Content Management. Prior to shifting to the video game industry, he worked in financial services developing online banking and trading programs.

His qualifications include:

– Bachelor of Commerce, Computer Programming and Financial Analysis

– Java Developer – Java Developer Course

– Cloudera Certified Hadoop Developer, Hadoop Developer Certification

We chatted to Ralph about this current position, what it’s like to work in software development, and how he got his start in this broad but dynamic industry.

If you’re already in IT, do you have any words of wisdom for students thinking about transitioning into the industry?

Upskilled: What does your job involve?

Ralph: My current job involves writing and enhancing Cloud services and associated infrastructure for an online computer game.

In terms of a typical day, I develop software following a process known as Agile software development. First thing in the morning we have what’s called a stand-up – a meeting where we have a quick overview of what we did yesterday, what we’re going to do today, and if we’re blocked in anyway. Then across a typical day I might write new software features, meet with other teams to design new features, or fix issues that have been reported.

Upskilled: Where did you acquire the knowledge to undertake this role? Was it through tertiary education, or was it through work experience?

Ralph: The knowledge I have at the moment is all stuff I’ve learned on the job, all based on experience I’ve had while working. The study I undertook beforehand provided me with the foundations and concepts.

Upskilled: Could you provide us with a summary of your job history? We’re interested in understanding how you got to where you are today.

Ralph: My first job in IT was when I received a contract to update a company’s website back in the mid-nineties. That’s how I started. I got into that more deeply and started working for a digital agency where we built entire websites – big corporate website creation is probably a good way of describing it. Here I focused on building large scale Ecommerce and Content Managed websites.

Upskilled: IT is broad, it’s complex, and it’s always changing. How do you stay educated in your role? Do you undertake new courses through tertiary education, or do you keep abreast by reading journals, magazines and speaking with people?

Ralph: I do a lot of focused reading. There’s so much coming out everyday – new everything. I focus on the areas in which I work and want to work.

Then I moved into building online banking and trading systems. And now, here I am, in computer gaming.

Upskilled: So do you refer to any specific newsletters or websites?

Ralph: Due to the number of websites and new content released every day, I get sent a daily digest of what’s going on in my specific part of the software ecosystem. That helps me keep an eye out for topics I’m interested in learning more about. Second to that, I listen to podcasts in the area of software development in which I work.

Upskilled: What are the big growth areas for IT?

Ralph: That’s a tough question as there are so many growth areas in IT at the moment. Certainly, Big Data/Data Science and Machine Learning are definitely in a growth phase. Cloud Computing and Cyber Security are other areas growing rapidly too.

Upskilled: Do you find the industry to be cyclical?

Ralph: I’d say it moves with the business cycle, although there have been times when the industry, for example with the dot-com boom, had its own cycle. There could be many other smaller IT cycles within the business cycle.

Upskilled: What is it about software development that makes the job right for you?

Ralph: There’s a certain satisfaction in designing, creating and watching what you have built come to life. It also involves problem solving, a process I enjoy.

Upskilled: What sort of work-life balance have you been able to achieve?

Ralph: Over the years I’ve got used to the nature of project-based work, so everywhere I’ve worked has always provided a good work-life balance. There’s a give and a take. At the beginning of a project, time is very flexible. Towards the end, where things can change for any number of reasons, more work may be required and I know we’ll need to put in more effort to get it over the line.

Upskilled: Finally, what’s the secret to your success in IT?

Ralph: With IT it can be really hard to get your start. If you don’t have existing skills, it’s competitive. The trick is to get skills in an area and that will allow you to break in. That’s one formula. Whether that’s through networking or even teaching yourself. And then you have to make yourself known to employers.

Find out what your preferred employers need. This is where I come back to networking, it could even be cold calling and saying ‘I want to get into this area, what do I need to do?” Sometimes it might appear as a closed shop, but on the other side, it’s a case of trying to find people with the right skill set.

It’s not just software skills; it’s finding people with soft skills. They’re really important. You can be the smartest person in the room, but if you cannot communicate to those around you, your intelligence will not be appreciated or put to good use.

7 New Cool gadgets at CES Technology show 2017

February 7, 2017 by admin 4 Comments

Yes 2017 is here and there is a lot of innovation happening in the technology space.  If you have not heard of the new car with no steering wheel and the machine that automatically  does the ironing and folding of clothes for you,  then you are not up to scratch with your tech news.

Here are some more interesting innovating gadgets unveiled at the CES show this year.

The automated ironing machine that can do the dull and drab work of ironing and folding your clothes right is called fondimate and is available for USD $850 dollars.

It just got unveiled at the  CES show in Las Vegas, Nevada USA….  It not only steams and presses your shirt but also folds it neatly.

This lady who won the million dollar lotto and said the first thing she would do is hire somebody to do the ironing would surely be interested in this. Here it is:

FoldiMate laundry robot

clip_image001

Above: FoldiMate folds your laundry. Image Credit: FoldiMate

FoldiMate is the womens and mens ultimate dream gadget. It has created a robot that will fold your laundry. Foldi Mate’s machine does this all when you clip your clothes onto a slot on the machine (this is just the bit that takes some work). The robot then pulls the clothing over a board and steams it, then folds it. Thats it done. Too easy.

You need this now! It takes the robot about just about 10 seconds to fold one item, and it has a capacity of about 15 to 20 items which is quite good and will save you quite some time. Once this smart little robot machine is finished with the whole load of clothes, it neatly delivers out the folded clothes for you to remove and stack or use. The machine is said to cost around $850 or so.

Next :

The Car with no steering wheel

The company that is so confident about its auto driving car that they haven’t put in a steering wheel is the auto giant  ford. ITS not launched yet, but its not too far away with current technology advances and will be released in 2021.

Ford plans to build a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals by 2021, the company announced. The vehicle will be aimed at ride-hailing and ride-sharing fleets.

Ford CEO Mark Fields and no sterring wheel

The motor vehicle  wont have steering wheel, brake or gas pedals, offering full Level 4 self-driving features which don’t require a human driver at all

Well ironing automated gadgets and cars that have no steering wheels is not the only breakthroughs of 2017.

This new retro kind of cool gadget just released will definitely make the romantics happy.  It’s called the love box (don’t ask) , what it does – ok then i will tell you…

Love box:

The LoveBox was invented by a French guy who missed his wife. She wasn’t as tech minded as him and didn’t like Skype or WhatsApp calling methods, and so he thought about a more convenient and romantic alternative to send messages between the two of them.

The sender using love box can type a small message for the receiver to see on a mirrored surface. The box heart spins when there’s a new message and the message is delivered. It will cost $120, with shipping starting in June 2017.

I love cars and this 2017  release from Toyota sure caught my fancy :

Toyota Concept-i

clip_image002

The future of cars is self-driving cars, but Toyota wants to give you more than that. The Concept-i vehicle shown at CES 2017 show would be capable of driving autonomously, with its biggest draw is the smart artificial intelligence that powers it.

Toyota claims the car learns to be smarter with this smart car being able to learn more about the drivers’ preferences and needs over time as you interact with it more just like a human being. By learning more it can start to suggest destinations after a driver chats with it and more features are going to be added as this unfolds and updates. This vehicle’s virtual assistant also got a name – not siri 2 – its called “Yui.”

Gadgets I crave and  I could not , not feature this amazing drone  from  parrot. They make amazing drones and this ones a bit special.

clip_image002[6]

BEST OF INNOVATIONS: DRONES AND UNMANNED SYSTEMS

The POWERUP FPV – Paper Airplane VR Drone from parrot

This was released by parrot as part of their POWERUP TOYS release

They had a stall at Booth #50801

The gadget PowerUp FPV lets you experience flight as if you were sitting in the cockpit of your very own paper airplane creation. This takes the virtual reality to another level with its ingenuity. The airplane generates a live video stream to the included VR cardboard Viewer.

You can see what your plane sees, and also control your paper drone with intuitive movements of your head making it soar higher that you expected. You need to get this!

What not to love about this laptop ?

I still am in search for the perfect laptop, i got a DELL laptop last year – but im due for an upgrade and change and  this one makes me takeout my wallet!!

Razer Project Valerie – The gamers/hackers laptop

clip_image002[8]

This will turn out to be many peoples dream laptop. It’s got the power and also the screens to go with it.

When you’re using a laptop for doing work, playing video games, Hacking code or streaming Netflix , one screen isn’t just enough. So why settle with two and instead have three?

Razer’s Project Valerie concept new dream computer laptop does just that by adding two screens to your laptop. These screens are foldable and have displays that expand out from the main screen in the centre. The screens are 17 inches diagonally and supports the newest 4K resolution

The good thing is that the company says the screens can be used independently or together as one giant display. Theta all to pro – the only con is – It weighs 12 pounds, which is more than the average notebook but more closer to top end gaming laptops.

Dont Be cruel to your family Jewels

There is something for everyone at the CES technology and gadgets  show  an this one is amazing and Men Only . Nah Not CES release seriously,  but indiegogogo

Spartan: the anti-radiation boxer shorts

clip_image002[10]

INDIEGOGO

Smartphones have become popular beyond belief and its takes over the phone world so much so, that we can’t do without one in everyday life. The thing that is on everyone’s corner of the mind, but not many people talk about is radiation from phones.

People have started to put their smart phones in their back pockets or front pockets at the risk of it slipping off and falling or getting lost, but he radiation fear still persists in the corner of your mind.

Spartan has developed a undergarment that looks to shield any man’s family jewels from this modern dilemma. It’s called the Spartan Boxer Briefs and these special undergarments feature anti-radiation tech that aim to protect men’s health and fertility. It does this by creating an electromagnetic shield that blocks wireless radiation from cellphone and WiFi signals.

This technology in the garment works on the same principle as a microwave but keeping the radiation out instead of inside. The technology definitely teaches you not to be cruel to your family jewels

USB DRIVES JUST GOT SUPER UPGRADED

One of the other gadgets that is close to my heart and got  released recently is a gadget by Kingston. I collect USB drives! I think that company is a south korean company, they have quality stuff and I have bought from them before. They just released a 2 terabyte USB drive , daymm !  I mean 2 TERABYTE in a small little USB that’s amazing.

The company has created a 2kingston 2 terbyte drive 1 terbyte small picTB pocket flash drive (also available in 1TB), called DataTraveler Ultimate GT (Generation Terabyte). This is now the world’s largest capacity USB flash drive. Data Traveler Ultimate GT offers superior quality being made of a zinc-alloy metal casing for shock resistance.

Specs of Kingston Drive

  • Capacities1: 1TB, 2TB
  • Speed: USB 3.1 Gen. 1 (USB 3.0)
  • Dimensions: 72mm x 26.94mm x 21mm
  • Operating Temperature: -25°C to 60°C
  • Storage Temperature: -40°C to 85°C
  • Warranty: 5-year warranty with free technical support
  • Compatible with: Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 (SP1), Mac OS v.10.9.x+, Linux v.2.6.x+, Chrome OS

But then its Korea, they had 1 terabyte pcs.. when we were still selling pcs with 200 gb in the shops 10 years ago (my Korean flatmate 10 years ago said so and had one)

The CES show is one of the biggest technology shows in the world and most big companies worth their money  showcase their new breakthrough products in this show.  Look out for the 2018 show next year! This year among other things, there was  a lot of focus on self driving cars and  home robots as well.

You can check out the CES official website link below to go check all the new technology that was released in 2017
