Installing and Setting up a wordpress blog Easily

I have created tutorials on getting your website started before, but people have given me feedback that it’s not detailed enough and had too much fluff . So here is a brand new one.

This is a  “barebones get your blogging started today” kind of guide with as many pictures as i could gather –  that I could include in one mega post . So don’t be shy and get started with your online venture already!

I deal with many hosting companies and bluehost is one of my favourite hosting companies. I recommend them just because they are always priced nice and affordable and have reliable hosting and they are also easy to use.

In fact they have been the top recommended hosting company by wordpress.org. I also recommend the “WordPress CMS” which is one of the easiest to use website software. They are many top Australian websites using wordpress including HeraldSun which uses the more pricey enterprise version VIP wordpress.

Below is the main hosting pricing plans for blue host called the

  • Basic plan
  • Plus plan
  • Pro plan.

[Prices for hosting plans below]

The plus plan is most popular for a reason, if you decide to start another blog then you can use the same hosting account for more blogs – anywhere up to 10 blogs.

Off course the basic plan makes sense if you are just starting out and on a budget, which most of us are.

I know when I was looking to start my first blog, the price was the most important factor in addition to reliability of the provider

Deal : Its not often that you get such a good hosting offer from bluehost at Current updated deal for 2021
Shared Basic Hosting Package Now Only $2.95 for 36 Months! one low price
[Most plans include one free domain]

The next couple of steps  to start a blog, could easily be done in a couple of minutes.

Step 1 – Choose a hosting plan that is suitable for you

clip_image004

At this stage, click on select – after selecting your plan if you have not got a domain and you are making use of the free domain name with your bluehost plan, you can then search for that free domain name over here.

Step 2 – Choose your  domain name

If you already got a domain name that you want to use with this webhosting account then you can transfer it to your blog hosting as well on this screen.

clip_image006

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Enter domain name” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Arial||||||||” text_font_size=”18px” inline_fonts=”Alice”]

Step 3  – Provide the Name and details for billing  and your confirmation emails

Next you put in your payment details and then go to the next step of choosing your plan and optional extras you would choose.

clip_image008

To get the $3.95 deal you will need to get the 36 month webhosting plan. I will be honest and tell you, that I thought this to be a trick to get me to sign up for a longer period. But in fact it saved me money over the longer period when I purchased my first hosting as the price rose the next year.

I managed to escape that price rise due to being on a longer plan. But you can choose a plan according to your ownr budget  and affordability.

At the minimum, I would recommend you get the domain privacy and site back up pro as optional extras, if you can afford it.

The domain privacy stops people from snooping on your name and address which would need to be listed in the registration details when you buy a domain name.

The site back up is regular backups of your website  that the hosting company  keeps just in case of any emergency  or hacking  of website by outsiders.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Choosing a Plan or Package” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Arial||||||||” text_font_size=”18px” inline_fonts=”Alice”]

Step 4 –  Select  your Plan or Package and any Optional extras

clip_image010

Please note down your login email/name and password that you will register with bluehost to login into WP admin later.

When you finish purchasing your hosting, you can login to your hosting account immediately with the login and password details.

Below is the wordpress backend cpanel sitehosting screen once you login top admin area. The website login area is different from this login area.

Step 5  – Click on the install word-press icon

clip_image012

Step 6 – Install WordPress

You will see this screen next (to start a brand new wordpress blog install), click start

clip_image013

Step 7 –  Select the free domain name you got or then the domain name you transferred in this screen and then click to install your blog

clip_image015

The wordpress website/blog installation process will begin now.

WordPress can be customised to be used as a blog or a business website. All you need to do is change the theme to change the blog design and look of the blog/website to any sort of website you need.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Final step: Blog is installing” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ text_font=”Arial||||||||” text_font_size=”18px” hover_enabled=”0″ inline_fonts=”Alice” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Step 9  –  Blog is installing

Themes are available on the internet from as low as $10 a theme and also for free from within your wordpress blog.

clip_image017

That’s it, follow the instructions on the next pages to finish, and your blog should get installed in the next couple of minutes and you should be ready to blog.

You will get sent an email with login details

Your blog is ready and set up, now all you have to do is write content and tweak your blog further if you need by logging into the admin area of your  blog.

I suggest you first  write up and article or two  on your blog as your first priority and then explore further  options from within your admin area over a period of time  to improve your website functionality, design and SEO.

Remember that this special price of $3.95 a month can be claimed by our digital grog readers by signing up from this tutorial here and you get this special price for 36 months + a free domain name.

The type of web host you choose is an incredibly important choice for what type of website you create. The type of server you choose impacts elements like performance, security, scalability, and management level of your website. Shared hosting is a great choice for beginners and smaller websites. It’s cost-effective and doesn’t require lots of technical knowledge to get started.

The good thing about getting a bluehost hosting account is that they not only offer other popular website software like Drupal and Joomla apart from word-press, but also offer a range of other software’s like Coppermine (you can create your own image gallery online which other people can contribute too), PHBB forums (you can create a forum of your own) and many more useful scripts.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”i hope outro” _builder_version=”4.9.4″ text_font=”Arial||||||||” text_font_size=”18px”]

I hope this detailed picture tutorial helped you in some way. Do leave me a comment below to show you luv or just ask a question and I will try to answer it soon as I can. Let me know if there is anything worth adding to this tutorialonce you have gone through the same process and I shall add it in or update in a new post.

Good luck on your new journey!!

building a online store and brand with ecommerce in 2016

Create Ecommerce Store  (no credit card required) – Start a 14 Day Free Trial Now‎

Many people still think that building an online shop involves a lot of technical wizardry and skills that would be required when it is exactly the opposite today.  Big software vendors ( Shopify and big commerce) have made it so easy that anyone can just sign up and build an online store within an hour or less and start selling.

“Big commerce” is an Australia, Sydney-based software start-up company that provides end to end services to start your eCommerce online store. It started up as a startup not too long ago and is now a well-established portal for building online store-front websites. The Shopify solution caters to the beginner entrepreneur as well as the established million dollars a day shops.

Bigcommerce powers over 95,000 online shops and have processed over $5 billion in transactions and that is no easy task. Its even got its top competitors like “Shopify” “Volusion” “3Dcart” worried. They have a good collection of store design add-ons and also provide website store examples to give you an idea of how your store can look. But Shopify is fast catching up with its ease of use and perfectly priced plans.

Bigcommerce was founded by BRW Young Rich Listers Eddie Machaalani and Mitchell Harper. Their customer’s list boasts some top companies like Samsung, Marvel, Cetaphil and Ubisoft yet they have affordable plans for smaller eCommerce stores. Below is our review on BC focusing on what’s important to you.

Building an online business store is no easy task and trust me I have gone through this well and truly a few times to know how hard it can be. There is more involved in starting an e-commerce store than it is for just starting a  blog or website, however software companies like Big Commerce and Shopify have made this task much easier with their custom software and help given in the form of written guides and video guides to set everything up.

There are plenty of reviews online, but I have my own unique viewpoints of why Bigcommerce and Shopify is an e-commerce store builder that you should consider trying out if you are really serious about creating your own online store.

Right now with both of them upping their game – if its ease of use and an all in one solution your after – I would recommend Shopify if your starting small and intend to grow big, but if you need a big solution for a big online shop then its “big” commerce. If your just looking to start a website as a blog or for your small business then these hosts are not for you as they are online shop  specific, you can check out my other 2019 webhosts listing over here  for starting a blog/website.

Cheap E-commerce Solution: Woo Commerce + WordPress Blog

Now before we go any further, I need to say that if you really are on a low budget and just want to test things out then this other option here might suit you. It includes setting up a wordpress blog and using a free payment and online shop plugin called woo commerce. This method is a bit more involved than using Shopify which is custom based shop software that works out of the box.

wordpress and woocommerceWith this method – you can get a wordpress blog for  ($3.95 a month) and add a woo commerce plugin (free) to get started quickly with your e-commerce shop /website/or blog.

This set up will allow you to run a blog store front on wordpress and sell products and accept payments via paypal through the woo-commerce plugin. You might want a spend a bit of extra money ($20 to $60) though to get a decent storefront wordpress design ( I recommend elegant themes for his ) to help attract traffic and build trust with a good-looking storefront design for your store.

What is this WooCommerce Plugin ?

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin that lets you turn your WordPress site into a full-featured online store. It gives you an easy way to handle inventory, payments, shipping, and more.

It gives you reports on customers and products and it works with practically any theme and doesn’t get in the way of your website. It can be easily integrated into an existing site as well.

The difference between this above cheap method and a proper eCommerce platform are many.

In an e-commerce platform, you will be able to manage everything – all in one place like store management, inventory management, shopping cart systems, social networking, blogging, SEO, security, ease of use and expandability. Costs play a big role in this decision. – but with wordpress and woo commerce – the connection between listing and payments are not as seamless and needs some tech knowledge or willingness to test and learn.

The good thing however with woo commerce is that Paypal tells you whenever you receive a payment with this method implemented so you can follow up with the delivery of product etc once you receive notification via woocommerce, so it’s not that hard after all.

Feel free to choose whichever platform you are comfortable with but let’s get on with the custom-made online shop builders – big commerce platform & Shopify

Pros and Cons of Using Bigcommerce for your online store

Let’s start with the features that big commerce offers because every person needs to know what they are getting when they sign up for an online store solution.

Features:

Pros

Integrated Education – As I said earlier their big university video tutorials are a great help on setting things up and teaching you all about this stuff

All in one platform – They have integrated pretty much everything together, so if you want reviews, an easy way to add & delete products, inventory management, integrated payments, analytics, order management, coupon code creation, discount functionality, easy shipping integration, etc., It’s all in one place. They have other marketing buttons like sell on Facebook, Google trusted sites which you can integrate into their dashboard.

In- Built Marketing Features – once you have logged into their admin panel and click on the marketing tab, you will find features like email marketing (keeping in touch with customers and promoting products)

Speed & Security for your store – You don’t need to worry about your store being online all the time ( they got a 99.95 % Uptime guarantee), as they ensure that your store is speedy to load and also secure from online threats.

Cons:

Design – While Big commerce can still work out of the box, you would probably need to get a designer to make it look top end. Their design functionality is basic but good enough to get started.T heir platform is easy enough for an outside designer to make you a custom good design for your shop with their platform.

Pricing plans for Big commerce

The 2nd most important thing you need to know is pricing for the ecommerce plans they have. You might argue, that in fact this is the most important point and I would still agree.

BIGCOMMERCE PRICING

Initially, Bigcommerce offered quite a few different pricing plans with different options, but they have refined it over the years and whittled it down to just three plans:

    • Bigcommerce Standard: $29.95 per month (Get it now)
    • Bigcommerce Plus: $79.95 per month
    • Bigcommerce Enterprise: pricing varies, depending on your business requirements

The ‘standard’ and ‘plus’ plans are aimed at individuals and small businesses. The more advanced Enterprise plan is geared more towards large businesses and corporates (users with very high bandwidth & advanced functionality requirements).

About the Popular standard plan:

BIGCOMMERCE STANDARD

Bigcommerce’s cheapest offering, the ‘standard’ plan, costs $29.95 a month and is more expensive than the equivalent starter plans offered by its competitors Shopify and Volusion ($9 and $15 respectively) – but BC offers a more comprehensive starter plan than either of those plans

One of the good features about Big commerce I like is that right from the start when they began they had the user in mind and has always had a very good support base with nice written tutorials and also Video tutorials to support their paying customers. They, in fact, have updated it even further and now got Bigcommerce University which puts a first-class e-commerce education at your fingertips all in one place – to help you succeed.

This section has In-depth videos hosted online store experts will teach you how to launch your store, attract shoppers, improve conversion and build loyalty. As these are on videos you can watch them and when you want according to your schedule.

Bigcommerce also works with Alibaba.com

Yes They have ABANDONED CART SAVER

What I really like about big commerce is the BIGCOMMERCE’S ABANDONED CART SAVER FEATURE. Bigcommerce’s abandoned cart feature – it’s one of the best out there. The tool allows you to create up to three automated emails to site visitors who go part of the way through the sales process only to leave your store without buying anything. T

This has the potential to dramatically increase your revenue with little effort – other than the ‘one-off’ time investment in setting up the automated messages – being involved.

BEST SOFTWARE FOR WEBSITE BUILDING

WordPress, the world’s top content management system (CMS),  is a versatile and flexible blogging platform  that is simple to use by even beginners and can be customised extensively if needed. The software has one of the largest library of free and premium themes and plug-ins  to make the task of creating and managing your website a breeze. With this  CMS, you can build professional looking business websites, personal blogs  and even large entertainment and news portals like MTV and CNN has done with wordpress.

With word-press and a  good web hosting provider you can easily build a  small personal blog  to a large business website with  little to no skills. If you’ve thought about building a website, you should definitely consider a WordPress web host.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”before table para why us hosts” _builder_version=”3.11.1″ text_font=”Ubuntu||||||||” text_font_size=”20px” header_font=”Ubuntu|500||on|||||”]

With the list below, there is a mix of Australian and US Webhosts that support WP hosting and “Managed wordpress hosting”. I have always used  US based hosts  due to their affordable  pricing  compared to some local aussie hosts and also the benefit of their easy website setup scripts for installing websites in minutes.

Below you can check out their features and plan prices  and choose for yourself.

2018: Price comparison Table for hosting companies

Choosing a “hosting company” for your blog or website is  a tough decision to make. You have  to consider  to cost of the web server plan, the value you will get,  the customer service  you can expect  among many other  smaller factors.

Hosting companies dont make it easy for you,  changing their prices and features included on a regular basis making it more difficult for you to compare  and choose among different hosts. So  what we have done is  drilled down to  a few of  top 10 hosts that are already listed above and given a little bit of an overview on them below.

Difference between hosting plans

Shared hosting

Shared hosting is one of the  most suitable plan  for  beginners  as  these plans  are normally cheap and yet have all the basic features that a  beginner blogger or webmaster needs. These plans are cheap because the servers provided are shared by many users and the load on servers is balanced.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner admin_label=”Row”][et_pb_column_inner type=”1_2″ saved_specialty_column_type=”1_2″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.98″ background_layout=”light”]

Dedicated or VPS hosting

This is hosting that is better than shared, as you get more exclusive use of the servers and therefore the server speeds are a bit better than shared. The basic features are the same, but you get some more freedom with the server end features. If you have some technical knowledge of servers you can take advantage of some of these features, but these additional features are not necessary  for basic running of a website.

VPS servers generally allow root access and Dedicated plans allow customisation of  your hosting environment.

The benefit  for one of these plans would be for better speed and custom backend modifications of your website. Dedicated servers can be priced higher than a lot of  VPS plans. This hosting is often the next step upgrade from shared hosting.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=”1_2″ saved_specialty_column_type=”1_2″][et_pb_text admin_label=”cloud managed wordpress hosts” _builder_version=”3.0.106″ background_layout=”light”]

Cloud and Managed wordpress hosts

Even though cloud and managed hosting is different. They both can be termed as managed hosting.

Cloud hosting is basically managed in the cloud automatically  and therefore  the main feature of this is that load balancing of your servers are all automated, to give your website the best performance according to your needs.

Managed wordpress hosting on the other hand is where the host has spent time  to modify the  server architecture to make you server optimised to load your website  quickly and keep it  running smooth and nicely with wordpress platform. They often have caching inbuilt with nginx. Some also provide CDNs with their hosting. This hosting is considered premium hosting and can cost more or even similar to dedicated.

Features that most hosting plans need

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_accordion _builder_version=”3.0.98″][et_pb_accordion_item _builder_version=”3.0.98″ title=”Disk storage” use_background_color_gradient=”off” background_color_gradient_start=”#2b87da” background_color_gradient_end=”#29c4a9″ background_color_gradient_type=”linear” background_color_gradient_direction=”180deg” background_color_gradient_direction_radial=”center” background_color_gradient_start_position=”0%” background_color_gradient_end_position=”100%” background_color_gradient_overlays_image=”off” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on” background_size=”cover” background_position=”center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_blend=”normal” allow_player_pause=”off” text_shadow_style=”none” box_shadow_style=”none”] Disk storage Websites don’t need much storage and so you can see many providers offer unlimited storage. Most basic plans also have enough storage to run a couple of sites without any problems. [/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item _builder_version=”3.0.98″ title=”Uptime” use_background_color_gradient=”off” background_color_gradient_start=”#2b87da” background_color_gradient_end=”#29c4a9″ background_color_gradient_type=”linear” background_color_gradient_direction=”180deg” background_color_gradient_direction_radial=”center” background_color_gradient_start_position=”0%” background_color_gradient_end_position=”100%” background_color_gradient_overlays_image=”off” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on” background_size=”cover” background_position=”center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_blend=”normal” allow_player_pause=”off” text_shadow_style=”none” box_shadow_style=”none”] Uptime This can differ from host to host, but if your host is offering an uptime of somewhere close to 99% you should be good. Watch out for hosts that can’t offer good uptime speeds, which means that your website won’t be available to your viewers occasionally when they have server problems. [/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item _builder_version=”3.0.98″ title=”Bandwidth” use_background_color_gradient=”off” background_color_gradient_start=”#2b87da” background_color_gradient_end=”#29c4a9″ background_color_gradient_type=”linear” background_color_gradient_direction=”180deg” background_color_gradient_direction_radial=”center” background_color_gradient_start_position=”0%” background_color_gradient_end_position=”100%” background_color_gradient_overlays_image=”off” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on” background_size=”cover” background_position=”center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_blend=”normal” allow_player_pause=”off” text_shadow_style=”none” box_shadow_style=”none”] Bandwidth This is an important one; as more viewers to your website mean you use more bandwidth. More plugins and add-ons to your website mean more bandwidth.  Most shared plans have enough bandwidth  for a normal popular website, but you can upgrade if you really get popular and start getting like 5,000 hits a day( which can take a lot of time to achieve). [/et_pb_accordion_item][/et_pb_accordion][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ fullwidth=”off” specialty=”off” prev_background_color=”#000000″][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=”3.0.98″ title=”Leave comments” url_new_window=”off” use_icon=”on” font_icon=”%%277%%” use_circle=”off” use_circle_border=”off” icon_placement=”top” use_icon_font_size=”off” background_layout=”light”]

Top picks for Blog Website Hosting for Australians in 2019

Post updated for 2019. Now I do know, that there are some good aussie web hosts in Australia , but if you are starting out with a new website or blogging site and need some cheap hosting  then it would be wise to do research before buying your webhosting.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image admin_label="Image besthosting2017" _builder_version="3.0.98" src="https://www.digitalgrog.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/updated-2018-best-hosting-for-websites-blog.png" show_in_lightbox="off" url_new_window="off" use_overlay="off" always_center_on_mobile="on" force_fullwidth="off" show_bottom_space="on" /][et_pb_text admin_label="I have used a mix" _builder_version="3.0.92" background_layout="light"]

I have used a mix of aussie hosts and US based web-hosting providers  in my list below and prices for blogging software and web-hosting can certainly differ a lot between these hosts.

US web-hosts can be quite competitive and affordable compared to some  of our local Australian companies.

I posted this price table below in 2017, but prices and features have been regularly updated. [ This post was updated on  09 January 2018 ]

Affordable Wordpress Hosting in Australia

I got this question asked to me on this blog ..

“I am planning to start a blog, most likely using the wordpress  blogging platform and  I am looking for a good web host (Australian preferable since most of my content will be for Australians).

– I have received many similar questions  since then –  so I decided to do this post

wordpress hosting for australia by go daddy

I have purchased .com.au domains from smarty host (local aussie provider –now netregistry) when I started my bloggin journey,  they used to provide a website hosting service as well which i never tested out .

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Net-registry are pretty good” _builder_version=”3.17.2″]

Net-registry are pretty  good  with their domain names service, however if you want to compare Australian web hosting prices against the  US based providers. Some of the US based  providers are definitely more affordable even with domain name prices(check my blog post where I recently bought .au domain name from Godaddy at a nice discount price here).

Godaddy also sell SSL certificates which help you secure your website and get https in your url (this help in ranking your website). Their custom plans also feature SSD hard drives now.

Below, I will also include smarty host(netregistry) in my comparison chart  for Australian + US hosting providers packages.

Dedicated servers are not listed  as they are more pricey and only shared plans which are affordable  have been featured here for bloggers and beginner websites .

I will rank them in order of my ratings  and preference with the best at the top of this list  as per my experience with them, except for smarty host  who I don’t  use for hosting  but just domain names – who is right at the top.

I have been using the rest of the Hosting companies mentioned for the last 10+ years while blogging. Some of these hosting plans listed below, also offer a bonus free domain name.

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world and is used by nearly 75 million websites. According to WordPress, more than 409 million people view more than 23.6 billion pages each month and users produce and whopping 69.5 million new posts every month. It also powers more than 25% of the world’s websites.

The first thing  to do when you are starting your  own website rather than hiring a website designer or  web developer, is to  get the WordPress platform to build your website.

This platform is regularly updated  to keep you safe from hackers  and upto date with the latest version of wordpress.

I say this because I have also used Joomla and Drupal  website builders which are good content management systems, but they are not as good as the WordPress platform in ease of use and flexibility to customise as per your needs.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”The ranking above” _builder_version=”3.0.86″ background_layout=”light”]

The ranking above is based on  my use of these service providers based on price, reliability, affordability, up-time, features, ease-of-use, server speed and overall support.

There is always the option to use premuim  Australian Web Hosting from good companies like rackspace or crucial, but budget shared US hosting is OK if your are just starting  a blog or website.

You can also get an .au domain name and still use US Webhosts  to host your Australian webpage.

Above in the chart –  Under features, I have updated the ones in green as essential things bloggers would  like to have in their hosting plan  and the ones in bold black font are the highlights /features of  that hosting provider

What is shared hosting?

Shared web hosting is what most people mean when they refer to “web-hosting”.  It simply means that many customers’ websites reside on a single web server, and that the server’s resources (CPU and RAM) are shared among every customer account on the machine.

Shared Plans is cheap because many people share one server.

one click install for wordpress

Most shared hosting plans  listed above offer free quick install scripts like above in the pic and sometimes also offer free design templates for your webpage,  Free domain email, FTP, $100 google adwords bonus   and Facebook advertising coupons etc.

To be fair, though, we still use these services even if we weren’t an affiliate. Some local reviews  ( from whirlpool.com.au)

.com.au, .net.au, .org.au Domain Names

NameScout

I found the cheapest provider to the public at only $59.99 per domain (2 years registration included – I  think this is pricey ), they had a really nice site, great functionality (they create redirecting email address’ on their servers that randomly generate so you don’t get spam from who is lookups which is awesome).

Only downside was their customer service, not only they don’t answer emails on weekends, they operate from Barbados, so if you send an email during the day you tend to not get a reply till early the next morning (e.g. 2 am). (Quote: eXtreme)

GoDaddy!

The cheapest I found was which was $7.95 US (on special) but normal price was $8.95 which is still great, and they offer the same management features as most other registrars. Only downside is they have a fair bit of ads on their site (no pop-ups), but since you barely ever visit your registrar it is no problem. I found registration very easy and they customer service was excellent. (Quote: eXtreme)

NameCheap

Namecheap is good: $8.88 US a year for .com, .net, .org and SSl certificates (https in your domain name)
Just registered 2 domains with them – no problems so far.

This Blog Webhosting costs only $20,000 a month

July 22, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

high traffic hosting services

You would be surprised to know that some websites pay $20,000 a month for hosting of their website.  That’s expensive and many bloggers cannot afford that kind of hosting money.

For many top entertainment and news websites like CNN, MTV their daily traffic can be in the hundred thousand and sometimes even million hits a day for really popular websites.

You would be surprised to know that many of these websites also use WordPress CMS like any small time blogger. But you won’t find them using cheap shared hosting plans like go daddy ($1), bluehost or site ground, like many of us beginner bloggers use.

These websites even though they are using wordpress, they need the hosting servers with the big guns so to speak. Their bandwidth requirements are humongous and they have large spikes in traffic on a regular basis.

Portals like these can go through quite a few up and downs in speed and bandwidth needs, when possibly  any of their hundreds of content pieces happen to go viral.

You could imagine large sites like these would churn out hundreds of articles and videos on a daily basis.  These websites need constant looking after to make sure everything is running right and loading fast to their viewers.

On large sites like these, you can find people watching hundreds of videos, filling in thousand forms a day for competitions, hundreds of signups for memberships perhaps, and thousands of downloads for a screensaver or a pdf file tutorial. It could be anything like these and these actions use data and bandwidth.

As you would imagine, different websites get traffic usage through different offerings or downloads offered and these all use huge bandwidth and so you need a reliable hosting server.

While we beginner and established bloggers often pay as less as $1 a month for hosting, these websites can pay anywhere from $25,000 to even $50,000 a month for web-hosting. They do get premium service like dedicated engineers looking after the website, 24 /7 monitoring and many more premium services that we would not get on a budget shared plan.

Here are my results of the expensive hosting providers. They are high priced because they cater to high volume traffic websites.

Top 5 Web-hosting Providers for high traffic websites

  • WordPress VIP Webhosting
  • Amazon AWS
  • Rackspace
  • Google GAE
  • Pagely

Most of the time, when we talk about hosting large WordPress sites, the conversation starts at VIP. If you don’t know, VIP is the Automatic solution for enterprise WordPress hosting.

Its claim to fame is all of the well-known news, blog and media sites it hosts (like CNN, Times, and TED, Tec crunch).

WordPress VIP Webhosting

https://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/

vip servers from wordpress.com

VIP ENTERPRISE PLAN (from WordPress.com)

Starts at $25,000/mo. ( can be up to $50,000 all inclusive)

Setup fee: $15,000 per site, $5,000 when using a partner – which means you will be paying $35,000 in the first month itself if you go with just a basic enterprise wordpress plan.

If you go with a subdomain add-on and quite likely 2 or 3 developers which you will need for a big site, the price per month could easily hit $50,000 + a month. This plan is good for a network of sites.

What it includes:

· 5 Sites

· Unlimited traffic and storage

· Unlimited Global CDN

· 1 Developer support (additional developer $10,000 per developer)

· Support availability 24/7/365

· Elastic search, live blog, Video press and site monitoring is included

VIP BASIC PLAN (from WordPress.com)

Starts at $10,000/mo.

Setup fee: $15,000 per site, $5,000 when using a partner – – which means you will be paying $30,000 in the first month itself if you go with this basic wordpress plan without any add-ons.

What it includes:

· 5 Sites

· Unlimited traffic and storage

· Unlimited Global CDN

· 1 Developer support ( additional developer $10,000 per developer)

· Support availability 24/7/365

[As compared to the enterprise plan the elastic search, live blog, Video press and site monitoring is not included with this plan and costs extra.]

AMAZON AWS

amazon web services

The two products/services you can use from Amazon AWS for your wordpress website is called “Amazon EC2” and “Amazon S3”.

Because of the technical nature of how amazon servers are organised, you will need a skilled website developer  to setup your website with amazon hosting servers.

Amazon EC2

Amazon EC2 is the product from Amazon AWS that allows you to host your WordPress website. Amazon EC2 allows you to configure and scale your websites needs and capacity easily to meet changing requirements and demand.

pricing for ec2 amazon wordpress

Amazon EC2 pricing is based on four components: the instance type you choose (EC2 comes in 40+ types), the region your instances are based in, the software you run, and the pricing model you select (on-demand instances, reserved capacity, spot, etc.).

The pricing for Amazon AWS is a bit complex compared to other hosting providers.

Example: Let’s say you decide to host your WordPress website on one Linux t2.large EC2 instance in the US East region. With an on-demand pricing model, your monthly charge for EC2 will be $76.13.

The total cost of building a WordPress website will vary depending on your usage and the instance types you select for the web server and database instance. Using the default configuration recommended by amazon, it will typically cost $450/month to host a WordPress site.

The total cost for hosting may increase if you use Auto Scaling to increase the number of web server instances in the event of increased traffic to your WordPress site (approximately $75/month for each additional web server- if the web server is active for the entire month).

Amazon S3

Amazon S3 provides secure, durable, and highly-scalable cloud storage for the objects (media libraries, theme files, images, videos, and JavaScript) that make up your WordPress website.

amazon s3 hosting

Amazon S3 makes it is easy to use object storage with a simple web interface to store and retrieve data from anywhere on the web.

How Pricing Works for S3:

S3 Pricing is based on five components: the type of S3 storage you use, where you store your WordPress content (e.g. US East vs. Asia Pacific – Sydney), the amount of data you store, the number of requests you or your users make to store new content or retrieve the content, and the amount of data that is transferred from S3 to you or your users.

Example: Using Standard Storage in US East, if you store 1 GB of content, you’d pay $0.03 per month. If you created your account in the past 12 months, and you’re eligible for the AWS Free Tier, you’d pay $0.00 per month.

For more information, see Amazon EC2 Pricing.

Rackspace WordPress Hosting

Rackspace has Australian servers and have a mix of entry level word-press plans and high capacity enterprise plans as well.  They provide root access to their cloud server hosting for word-press.

rackspace aus hosting

Entry level Hosting is $128 a month

Pricing similar to enterprise plans can be anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 a month based on your server requirements.

You can get a customised quote from them.

What it includes:

· Cloud Servers

· LAMP stacks, load balancing or caching are implemented for fast speed.

· Full Control to utilize nearly any WordPress Plug-in

· Local SSD High Performance Storage

· Offer root-level access and APIs

· 24x7x365 Support

Rackspace has been helping business run web content management platforms since 1998.

Unfortunately they don’t provide prices for high capacity enterprise plans. For high traffic and large websites, you will have to contact them and request a custom quote.

You can get your wordpress pricing from rackspace over here or use their price calculator for a specific detailed pricing based on bandwith and addons.

Pagely WordPress Plans

Pagely has wordpress managed plans. They provide free white-glove site migration of up to two sites and a 30 day money back guarantee.

They are powered by Amazon Web services.

pagely logo website servers

The Pulsar Plan

$20,000/mo. ($22,800/yr. – No setup fee)

What it includes:

· 1 Production site

· Included disk

· Included Bandwidth

· Included CDN

· Full site/monitoring results

· 1 Hour Guaranteed support response

Pagely VPS -1 (the entry level wordpress plan)

$499/mo. ($5,689/yr.)

This is a WordPress Optimized entry-level plan with staging and database access complemented by 3.75GB of RAM on SSD backed Amazon c4.large instance.

It’s on a Shared Aurora RDS Database Cluster.

What it includes:

· 30 Sites

· 50 GB Disk

· 200 GB Bandwidth

· 1TB CDN

With this plan you can prepay annually and save 5% for now.

Pagely is a webhost that sources its hosting from Amazon, and is also one of their premiere partners.  Pagely takes out the technical  difficulty you could face setting up a wordpress website with  amazon. They offer WordPress hosting for small and large companies alike.

Most of the high priced servers or hosting for big sites is called enterprise plans or custom made to order plans. They provide custom plans based on your  website requirements and server architecture.

If you need scaling, or already have an agreement with Amazon for infrastructure, or if you expect your project to grow and want all that Amazon can offer but you don’t want to turn the work into a DIY project, Pagely will likely be the best fit for you.

What do you get with these high priced plans ?

With these high priced plans, the more you pay the more you get. Sometimes if your lucky, you can  request freebies to be thrown in as a bonus as well.

However most high traffic hosting service providers,  give you a set of basic  features with every plan. Below are some typical features to look out for in the high ticket  plan you are purchasing

Typical features of a high priced hosting plan:

· Dedicated site engineer provided

· Customised server infrastructure for website if needed.

· Unlimited bandwidth

· High amounts of memory/ram on servers

· CDN and caching Inbuilt

If any of these above features are missing in your webhosting plan you purchased,  and your plan is more than $10,000 a month – you should be having a chat with your  hosting provider.

Cheap Hosting Vs Expensive hosting

Today with cheap hosting you purchase your shared hosting plan and  all you get is minimum or skeleton support, such is not the case with premium webhosting.

With the budget or cheap hosts, you don’t even get phone support from most providers today. Many of these shared plan providers only provide online chat support – which is often horrible and inefficient.

This is something you will have to put up with in budget host plans.

With these plans, you have to do the website installation and setup all by yourself. Luckily they have created  custom install scripts to assist with this process, which makes the job somewhat easy.

Some of the top shared plans an hosting providers are below [budget hosting]

sahred hosting plans

Hosting Provider Price of Plan Offer Link
Bluehost shared plan $3.95 > Plan details
Go Daddy shared Plan $1 > Offer details
Hostgator Shared Plan $3.95 > What’s included

There is also a market in-between cheap hosts and very costly hosts. These are for the mid-sized webhosting companies for small businesses.

Hosting companies like WP engine, Liquidweb ($189/mo –20 sites Use code WordPress33 –33% off for 3 months) and Pagely cater to such mid-sized businesses  to large business with robust or custom optimised WP plans.

The mid sized plans from these providers can often be  priced between $1000 a month up to the  $5,000 dollar a month range. They often customise these plans according to your  website traffic, data and infrastructure needs.

Wish list –  If you are purchasing hosting from a High Traffic Website hosting provider:

  • · Unlimited SSD Disk Space and Bandwidth
  • · Free 256-Bit SSL Certificate
  • · Secured by ModSecurity and MagicSpam Pro
  • · Full Acronis Daily backups at no extra cost
  • · 99.99% LiteSpeed Cloud Uptime Guarantee

This above list is a wish list  that you should look to have when purchasing a  new premium  hosting account and you are willing to spend at least $5,000 a month and upwards on a website server upgrade.

These included features will give  you a solid base  for the security and stability of your website.

How Big Companies manage their hosting

Many large Internet companies (Amazon, Facebook, and Google, for example) often do run (primarily, if not exclusively) their own data centres because they want/require more control over their data, technology, and costs.

But Netflix, for example, uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) pretty heavily. Netflix uses AWS to do their video encoding, for example, and runs huge numbers of virtual machines in the AWS cloud.

In my experience, most big companies have such diverse web requirements that they are likely to use a mix of their own data centres, third-party hosting and, cloud services.

They can use mostly these three different paths:

(to run their services)

· Own datacentre

· Renting racks at a co-location space

· Hosting it on a third party “cloud”

Optimising Big Websites

When optimising big sites inbuilt coding, custom and third party applications can be used for optimising your website for speed and and efficiency.

Often applications like Cloudflare, MaxCDN, and/or a cache plugin are used to help you scale a site.  With word press you can either use third party applications/services like these to increase your speed stability or create custom server or scripts within your server to do these functions.

Many of the top level websites like Facebook and amazon and YouTube that receive millions of hits every day from all over the world, have their own data centres which exclusively serve their own data and content.

They often have data centres spread around the world for faster online access to their customers to that particular area/country just like a CDN. So you can say in theory, they have like their own inbuilt CDN and caching technology in their servers.

The big boys In hosting servers or datacentres

Amazon has their own infrastructure and is also one of the largest web hosting companies on earth. (See Amazon AWS).

These guys are certainly bigger than Hostgator and Godaddy in terms of how much hosting they are using, since they own multiple data centres around the globe to serve a billion users and massive amounts of content.

Amazon Web Services already has a reputation for being able to handle very large loads

Facebook owns their own datacentre’s around the world. They even create their own server hardware from scratch.  You would ask why – This allows Facebook to save energy by super-optimizing their hardware to their software and vice versa.

Facebook used to use Rackspace back in 2009/2010 (as per GitHub), but has since grown *a lot*

Tools to find out website hosting used

Often you wonder, this website looks popular and is quite fast  too, I wonder who they use for hosting?

If you want to get a feel for what mix of technology or servers a specific website is using, this tool “BuiltWith – Web Technology Profiler”  gives you a fair idea for most sites.

Another tool/service to see who is self-hosting is “Netcraft’s Search Web by Domain” because they list netblock owners.

pros and cons

Summary

All the hosts featured here are reputable  and capable of handling high traffic websites including wordpress websites.

When you have  big needs  for your high traffic website, its best to go with a reputable server provider who ticks all the boxes for your requirements.

Most servers will be able to add  services to your order based on what you are paying and often they can offer a free add on bonus on request.

The basic server structure would not be able to be changed much most of the time, so make sure you know what they are running on their servers  and if it will work with your website needs.

Good luck and all the best finding your new host and let me know in comments, if you know any webhosts pricier than the ones I listed here. Ciao!

[24/7/365, round-the-clock customer care operations and good phone support]

Not many websitehosting companies now days give an offer where you can get both a domain and a hosting for free at the same time, so this offer is particularly appealing if you’re starting a new blog or then looking for a second hosting account to start a second website or blog.

Youtube video for blog setup from howtoblogtv

[Video on how to set up blog with godaddy]

Both webhosting providers support the most popular blogging software wordpress, which can be installed quickly with a 1 click install. They also support many other blog software scripts, forums scripts and image galleries scripts, if you want to host something other than a blog.

The most important bit is that , you can install more than 1 blog on your hosting account so If you suddenly decide to get another domain name and start a new second blog, you don’t need to buy another hosting account.

The above listed hosting plans prices from these two providers are for a monthly basis, but are charged on a yearly basis, so you will have to calculate the total costs on a yearly basis. Plans are also available for a pay as you go monthly basis, but then the prices are a bit pricier than the ones listed above.

Guide – Building a wordpress blog in 3 steps and more https://t.co/nQGKpA0Mm7 pic.twitter.com/SEosYW3lxa

— DigitalGrog (@undermarrest) April 20, 2018

Why are these Hosting and domain plans so cheap?

These bloghosting providers normally can afford to give these low prices only due to offering these plans to new customers and making money from customers over the longer term, when they extend their contracts. The advertised price is only for the first year, and then it switches back to normal renewal prices a few dollars more. You have the options at that time to switch to a new hosting provider to then remain as a customer with your existing website-host.

Dedicated servers Vs shared plans

These plans are cheaper because the y are shared hosting plans and not dedicated servers or VPS servers which are a bit more costly and not shared servers. The dedicated and Vps servers are generally quite speedy and more exclusive. However if your just starting out with a website or blog, these shared plans will easily serve your purpose at a reasonable price. These above two provided hosting plans are currently cheaper than most other popular shared plans.

Bluehost and go daddy also offer great tips and blogging and website guides on their blog https://garage.godaddy.com/ and http://www.bluehost.com/blog/ blogs and they also offer server checking status tools to check your server status

Hosting of your blog or website is considered the backbone of your blog and one of the main factors that keeps your blog running smoothly without glitches and if you get this important factor wrong with a bad hosting provider, you could be missing out on valuable traffic from your viewers due to dodgy servers that are slow or then having server issues. Make sure you check the uptime of your websitehost; Bluehost and godaddy have a good uptime rating and have just upgraded their servers so speed is also good. digitalgrog special offer small

Right now you can get a free domain name with both of them so both deals are good; however godaddy is beating bluehost on price. Bluehost though does have more scripts/software to install and choose from in their hosting panel and have a much more user friendly administration panel.

[ Note: Digitalgrog is a Bluehost/ Hostgator/ Hostmonster/ Godaddy /Dreamhost/Ipage affiliate partner and we also have hosting accounts with these services, which means that in addition to using their service, we also receive a commission for referring new customers. To be fair, though, we would still use  any of these Hosting services , but do have a preference  for some  and so we have done a full review of all the hosting  partners we use. Ergo, we don’t recommend Bluehost or any featured host just because we’re an affiliate (every hosting company offers a similar affiliate program and you could pick any of them ), but we recommend Bluehost because they are the best, most reliable option. Plus, because we’re a partner, Bluehost offers a special price for digitalgrog.com.au readers: only $3.49 a month and you already have our godaddy $1 special above. That’s a phenomenal price. Links provided above will take you to  the latest updated promo deals. Feel free to pick which host suits your budget or preference and good luck 🙂 ]
